Zora Neale Hurston’s work changed the trajectory of my life. It’s not just why I became an anthropologist. Her life was a map - emphasizing that one is never late to the pursuit of dreams. These days living next door to Eatonville and being part of its continued celebration of Black Excellence give me inspiration and hope.

The absolutely honore sous comments I’ve been getting about George Floy’ds murder tell everything about the direction the needle has moved in the past 4 years. The notion that any person does not have the right to respectful treatment and due process is literally inhumane. The idea that being a former felon or having a drug addiction renders ANYONE without human rights is horrendous and a modern reflection of the dehumanizing nature of discrimination on every level. #blacklivesmatter #georgefloyd by @dbmaroon

Four years later what has changed? The words here are pulled directly from court transcripts and are in my essay on the twin tragedies of memorial day weekend 2020 appearing in Black Lived American Love. We must both bear witness and recount the truths that can never be forgotten even as we bury the victimes by @dbmaroon
