Point out the ridiculousness in the most benign way and hopefully, eventually the stupidity will start to wear away… by @dbwill211

The ice is no match for the sun. Icicles and covered limbs and branches are melting, giving way to restoration of power for 1000’s of cold Memphians. Grateful for a warm place in my home despite the continuing days without any power.

Felt inspired to venture out and see what the sun is capable of today ❄️💧🌞

I had the opportunity to meet Cicely Tyson in college. She was the guest of honor for a talk about her life, her work and the legacy she wanted to leave. She was in real life the legendary star of stage and screen one could imagine.
And yet authentic, real, funny as all get out, nurturing and most of all generous.

Generous with her time and talent and patience and love for all those brown faces assembled to hang on her every profound word.

I am humbled and honored to have met her.

Rest.
We bear your legacy. 😔❤️🙏🏽✊🏾

Ready to lead. Now the real work can begin. With a talented, experienced and compassionate administration we, the people, can begin to shape this nation into a dynamically growing land where all have a voice.
Some will be lost to the fray, others will gain new direction and purpose. We have been empowered to build the future that we seek.

My great friend Wiley of @wileybrownstudios asked me to help him with photographing for the Congressional Black Caucus a few years back. ⁣
⁣
It was a great event in that I got to hear from Black law makers of the day about all the things that were going on, in many cases behind closed doors, that affected the lives of Black Americans in very positive ways. It was a wake up call to what is being done and also how much more yet needs to be done. ⁣
⁣
I remember distinctly though when Representative John Lewis arrived. There was a palpable stillness as people realized he had entered the conference room. The atmosphere quickly turned to hushed voices, pointing fingers and a few cheers and yelps. His presence felt like a sign that things were still moving in the right direction. He was here to keep us on the good path, fighting the good fight and cheering us on as we worked towards building a better tomorrow. ⁣
⁣
Although when this picture of the Congressman and I was taken, and I was awed at being in the presence of this American hero, my day would get even better! I had already called my friends @danajamesmwangi and @coolurbanhippie to join me in listening to the caucus weigh in on issues great and small. They needed to hear what I was hearing! They arrived just in time (kismet?) for us all to be shut in the elevator with the esteemed John Lewis. We had his attention and his ours for six glorious floors. We officially introduced ourselves and thanked him for his sacrifices and dedicated work. He in turn said these incredible words to us: “Keep the fight. You are doing good work and I want to hear more about it. I am proud of you.” ⁣
⁣
Sigh. Two minutes… ⁣
⁣
Sometimes that’s all it takes to inspire hope and foster achievement. We were deeply moved and honored by his words, his presence and his supportive appeal. ⁣
⁣
Thank you Congressman John Lewis. ⁣
Now you can rest. ⁣
We got this. ⁣

The amount of technology at our command, the tremendous capacity to organize and communicate with large groups of people at once all add to our ability to wield the power at our disposal. It’s time to use the power we’ve had all along.

Important day.
Important place.
Important people.
Juneteenth is a celebration of black freedom. A hard won and well deserved holiday that we choose to observe, regardless of its national prominence or legal status. A day of joy, release, renewal, recharge, reflection and jubilation!

Important day.
Important place.
Important people.
We gathered together, with safety in mind, to refresh relationships, to console and exalt each other. To show off our creative fashion use of protective masks and cultural finery. And we did it in a space designed to encourage respect of history and homage to the ancestors.
Important Day.
Important Place.
Important People.
I asked everyone to wear their masks for these portraits, first to represent the times we are living through, but more significantly to show how our beauty and power shines through, no matter how much we are silenced or hidden or constrained. Dr Angelou says, “Still I Rise”

And so we shall.
