In August, I finished a novel entitled, “The Best Way to Bury Your Husband” by Alexia Casale.

In her author’s note, she wrote, “This novel is an attempt to use humour to cut through people’s reluctance to engage. All the women in this story kill in self-defence in the context of long-term violence: they are now perpetrators of violence as well as victims, but that is the point — their situation is complicated, and that complication introduces a window for sympathy and emotional engagement while we go on this most unlikely adventure. The book in no way glorifies female violence — at most it quietly asks what is the right way to represent women who have suffered years of serious abuse and can see no other way out? Indeed, I set the book in the Lockdown to demonstrate that the women in the Lockdown Ladies’ Burial Club don’t have the usual avenues of escape, even with all their attendant dangers, given that many women are killed by ex-partners, not just current ones.”

A few weeks later, I wrote and recorded the following audio you’re listening to. Ironically, I *was* scared to post this (for a few months) due to its theme and the uncertainty of how it would be received overall. It was on the shelf for quite some time (unknown to me) waiting for its right moment to be heard.

I’m not an activist, but I don’t think one has to be to stand for those who can’t. If I can contribute anything to this cause, let it be my creative expression.💜

Child Woman. My first album. Yours now!

Thank you Jesus for blessing me with the gift of music and a concerning amount of grit to keep at it all these years. Thank YOU for being here. Listening along. You’re not allowed to leave, sorry. Special special special thanks to @tru.u.za for the studio space! Couldn’t have wished for a better guide than Razaan herself. Happy Black History month! 🖤🤍
