sharing our favorite spots to eat, drink,
stay(cation) & play at home in 𖤥 Washington, DC

This trail is 2hours from Washington, DC… translates to “Big Castle” in German, and is one of our favorites for sunset. —— ⚠️ Before you head out though… it is so important that we all educate ourselves on & practice LNT principles to keep all of our outdoor spaces beautiful. Always stay on established paths, be respectful of other visitors and wildlife, and pack out your trash (including apple cores/banana peels). —— 🏰 Big Schloss via Wolf Gap Trail 📍Shenandoah County, Virginia 🌲 George Washington Nat’l Forest 🚗 2ish hours from Washington, DC 🥾 4.3 miles round trip/out + back 💪 Moderate Alltrails rating 🏔️ 1046 ft elevation gain —— 🍺 Afterwards head to Woodstock Brew House —> We haven’t tried a beer from this brewery that we didn’t love, and we’re *obsessed* with their nachos. —— Have you hiked this castle-esque trail? Regardless… it’s a great one for both leaf peeping and stick season, so send this to your hiking buddies & follow for beautiful views in the Eastern United States (+ beyond)!! Happy Exploring! The best all day happy hour in DC? With $6 craft beer and wine, $10 cocktails and snacks starting at $10, it just might be… @AlaResturants invited us out to their newly-renovated Dupont Circle location to try their Michelin-recommended “Levantine Cuisine with a modern twist,” and it’s safe to say it deserves a spot on your rotation. If you stay for dinner, we highly recommend ordering their Quzi Warak Enab. It’s served table-side and big enough to share. They also offer bottomless brunch, a $58 tasting experience, and have a location in Bethesda (that recently won the Best of Bethesda Readers’ Pick for Mediterranean/Middle Eastern Restaurant) that’s now on our list. #dcfoodie #202 #washingtondc #dceats by @dc.everafter
How to make a day of it 👇🍂 (📌𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 this for planning because this spot is just over an hour from both DC & Baltimore and makes for a super easy and affordable outdoorsy day trip) 🚗 Start by driving to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and spend the afternoon bopping around town—> Many of the historic buildings have been preserved and turned into mini-museums and others house local shops and restaurants. 🥾 Jefferson Rock, where you can take in a view that Thomas Jefferson described as “worth a voyage across the Atlantic,” is also a must-see. 🍴Grab lunch at @TheRabbitHoleWV or @HarpersFerryBrewing. Both have dog-friendly outdoor seating and offer a trifecta of great food, drinks, & views of the river. 🥾 Afterwards, drive 10mins to Maryland’s South Mountain State Park and hike Weverton Cliffs. ⛰️ It’s 1.9 miles w/ 567ft of elevation gain 🚘 There’s a public parking lot that can be found across the street from the trailhead. The trail begins with some rocky stairs that you’ll see from the road. ☀️ This hike is especially beautiful at sunset, and if you choose to stay at the summit until the sun disappears, be prepared for a rocky descent and don’t forget your headlamp— and of course practice LNT and leave the trail better than you found it. Happy Fall & Happy Exploring!! #daytripsfromdc #marylandhiking #harpersferry #almostheavenwv fallfoliage by @dc.everafter
This hike in Virginia will blow you away 😮‍💨 But before you head out, promise to practice leave no trace: Plan ahead, stay on trail, pack out everything you pack in, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, give wildlife plenty of space, and be considerate of other visitors. Buzzard Rock Trail in George Washington National Forest is one of our all time favorite hikes near DC, and our go-to whenever we’re looking to catch a pretty sunset without going too far from home… 🥾3.8 miles round trip ⛰️ 675ft elevation gain 😮‍💨 Moderate AllTrails rating 🐺 Leashed dog friendly 🌄 West-facing & gorgeous at sunset 🚘‼️Note: parking is very limited— only park in designated spots (or you could get towed) and have a backup plan in mind if the lot is full. Happy Exploring! Xx, Aleah + Seth by @dc.everafter

It’s located in Old Town Alexandria’s @TheStudyALX at @MorrisonHouseHotel, and will feature live piano music, themed cocktails and a selection of food from The Study’s restaurant menu. To enter, you must secure a timed entry pass, and you’ll receive directions on where to find the secret door and librarian the week of the event. Passes cost $12 (with $5 from every ticket donated directly to the Virginia Library Association in support of local libraries and librarians). You only have from 11/10 - 11/14 to experience this celebration of the freedom to read and the power of the written word (with good company and cocktails)…so run, don’t walk (or tell anyone) to the vibiest little literary room in the DMV. swimming hole/waterfall hikes that are worth the drive from Washington, DC 🌿💦 📌 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 because it’s HOTT 🥵🌿⚠️& always 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 by staying on established trails, giving wildlife plenty of space, packing out your trash (including organics), using natural sunscreen when swimming, and considering picking up litter that others left behind. It’s our responsibility to protect the places that we love 🫶🌱 📍Cedar Run Falls Trail (SNP) 🥾 5.8 miles ⛰️ 2.2Kft of elevation 📍 South River Falls Trail (SNP) 🥾 4.3 miles ⛰️ 1.2Kft of elevation 📍 Overall Run Falls Via Thompson Hollow (SNP) 🥾 2.1 miles ⛰️ 400ft of elevation 📍 Potomac State Forest’s Lostland Run Trail 🥾 We hiked 8ish miles down to the North Branch Potomac. There’s so much more to do nearby around Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake too. 📍PA’s Ohiopyle State Park in PA’s Laurel Highlands is a perfect spot year round, and now is still a great time to chase waterfalls, send it down the park’s natural sandstone waterslides and raft down the Youghiogheny River. 📍 Roaring Run Falls is one of the most accessible waterfall trails (1.5 mile loop) in VA’s Blue Ridge and has several spots to take a dip along the trail including a natural waterslide. The last two made the list b/c they have swimming holes tucked away nearby— 📍 Monongahela Nat’l Forest’s Seneca Rocks, WV 🥾 3 miles 🏔 850ft of elevation 📍 GW Nat’l Forest’s Buzzard Rocks, VA 🥾 3.8 miles ⛰️ 675ft of elevation ⚠️ Always check water conditions/depth/for debris before jumping and know your limits. Natural rock slides are inherently sketchy & wet rocks are slippery, so exercise caution and look these spots up (scour AllTrails reviews) before heading out, so you know what to expect in terms of parking/cell service/current conditions. Happy Exploring!!! XO, Aleah + Seth by @dc.everafter
A hike near DC that we consider perfect —— 📍Raven Rocks Vista via the Appalachian Trail will take you from Bluemont, VA to WV and back in an afternoon 🐶 Dog-friendly 🥾 5.1 miles out & back 💪 Challenging Alltrails rating 🏔️ 1500 ft elevation gain and lots of rocks —> this section of the Appalachian Trail is often called the Roller Coaster and with lots of steep inclines and declines along the way it’s easy to see why 🍁 This hike is great year-round, and will offer top tier leaf peeping in just a few weeks 🚗 1 hour from Washington, DC —> Parking is limited and fills up quickly on weekends, so we recommend having a back-up hike in place if you can’t snag a spot. 🐻 If you’re looking for an easier nearby hike, we recommend Bear’s Den Park trail, which is 1.6 miles with 285ft of elevation gain —— 🍻 Afterwards head to @bearchasebrew —— ⚠️ As more and more people are reaping the benefits of Mama Nature, it is so important that we all educate ourselves on & practice LNT to keep all of our outdoor spaces beautiful. It’s also critical that you know your limits (Read: 0.5 zoom works wonders for making ledges look more sketch than they are… and a *sick shot* is never more important than your safety)!! —— —> Send this post to your outdoorsy besties & follow for more beautiful views in the Eastern United States (+ beyond) —— Have you ever crossed a state line on a day hike? #showmeabeautifulview #dcblogger #daytripsfromdc #hikemore by @dc.everafter
Creek Rat Maxxing in Shenandoah… in honor of National Parks Week & the 110th Birthday of the National Park Service 🥳 BUT FIRST… it’s critical that we not only celebrate, but also use our voices to protect our national parks/forests/monuments/seashores… because these places need our help. The USDA announced its plan to rescind the Roadless Rule which protects 45 million acres of National Forests. This roll back would allow new roads and large-scale logging in some of our country’s most primitive areas and threaten more than 25,000 miles of trails, 10,000 climbing routes, and over 10,000 miles of mountain biking as well as our nation’s $1.3 trillion outdoor recreation economy that supports local economies & over 5 million jobs across the country.… not to mention the critical wildlife habitat and clean air and water that these ecosystems protect. In Virginia alone, this recision could open up 400,000 acres of forest, largely across the Shenandoah Valley, to development. Public Comments are open thru September 21st. We popped a link in our bio where you can submit your comment. Our National Parks and monuments are also being developed as we speak, and to make your voice heard you can call and email your representatives and urge them to protect Big Bend, Bear’s Ears, and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Scripts are available via @5Calls. Visit these places (responsibly) to see why they’re special… and bring your friends. People won’t care about what they don’t know about, and won’t fight for what they don’t love… so by sharing our love for these places we can inspire more folks to fall in love with them and get loud for their protection. And this one should be a given, but always practice leave no trace when exploring the outdoors. Plan ahead, stick to durable trails, pack out what you pack in, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors. Also, if you’re creek rat maxxing, use natural sunscreen. As Always, Happy Exploring! Xx, Aleah + Seth by @dc.everafter
DC’s most underrated garden 🌸 ⇉ 📍 Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens is the only National Park site dedicated to aquatic plants, and their resident lotus flowers (which are kinda like the cherry blossoms of the summer) are in full bloom. 🪷 While @kenilworthnps is open (and beautiful) year round, the Lotus and Water Lily Festival is our favorite time to visit. It’s happening July 18 + 19 this year and will feature yoga, meditation, forest bathing and more. —> Regardless of when you go, plan to get there early so you can see the flowers fully open (& beat the heat)!! 🐸 Last thing, remember to practice leave no trace principles when you visit by staying on established paths, never picking flowers, & giving wildlife ample space 🫶 🔖 Tag who you’re going with, and follow for more outdoorsy things to do in DC ✌️🌸🌿 #washingtondc #thingstododc #findyourpark #dcblogger #thingstodoindc by @dc.everafter
Steal our day trip itinerary from DC ⇊ to pet goats, pick blueberries, tour a sustainable distillery and have a fun little day in the 🫐🦙🌽🌲🥾🥃 part of Maryland. 📍 All these spots are in Montgomery County, and getting there from DC will take you less than an hour. 👉 Song Dog invited us out for a tour + tasting so we decided to make a day of it and put together a little ruins/local business/farm tour that proved to be both the cutest little date day and super family-friendly, so grab your beau, bestie, kids, whoever and get ready to have yourself a day. 🦙🌸 Stop 1: Explore Seneca Mill & Quarry Ruins. To get there, you’ll park at the Seneca Creek Aqueduct and take along a short trail that branches off from the C&O Canal towpath at Mile 22.8. The stonecutting mill was built in 1837 and cut the stone for hundreds of buildings in/around Baltimore and Washington, DC (including the Smithsonian Castle) before the quarry closed in 1901, and today it’s open to the public to explore. 🌿 🌻 Stop 2: Homestead Farm where you’ll find adorable animals and U-pick flowers and produce. Depending on when you go/whats in season, you can pick blueberries, apples, blackberries and/or wildflowers. 🌽🥃 Stop 3: @SongDogDistilling where you can tour their sustainable distillery and enjoy craft cocktails made with spirits distilled right on sight. They also have a giant front lawn, food trucks, curated chocolate and cheese tastings paired with their spirits, and snacks (their spinach dip is delicious)!! One of the owners is a conservation biologist and their distillation process is rooted in conservation and eco-friendly practices— which we love. 🥾🚴🏼‍♀️ If you want to add on some stops, Seneca Creek State Park is super close and perfect for a little hike or bike ride, and Sugarloaf Mountain is also worth the drive, if you’re up for a hike. So send this to who you’re bringing and follow @happilyeverexploring for more day trip ideas near DC!! The best smash burgers in DC?!? 🍔 We think so… @ChardEats, the viral smash burger spot from around the DMV, just opened a permanent brick and mortar location at 📍1409 T St, NW in Washington, DC! They serve up all organic, 100% halal, grass-fed beef patties made from ingredients sourced from local farms, duck fat fries and chicken filets, and delicious, hand-spun organic whole milk shakes. Plus, their avocado-oil based sauces are made in-house daily from scratch. 3 years ago, Char’d was born as a food truck with one goal in mind, to provide delicious yet guilt-free “fast food” that the owners would be happy to serve their own families. From the beginning, they’ve prioritized clean ingredients without sacrificing flavor. Fast forward to now, they have two food trucks roaming around MD and VA and walk in locations in the 📍D (T Street), the 📍M (Bethesda), and the 📍V (Tysons Galleria). Definitely check out Char’d next time you’re craving some fast, causal noms that you can feel good about eating. #dcfoodie #202 #washingtondc #dceats #smashburger by @dc.everafter
@MubadalaDCOpen is happening now through 8/2… @TheBrandGuild invited us out for a little first look + tasting last week, and after going back for the real thing today, it’s safe to say that whether you’re in a suite, snag a VIP ticket (with access to dishes from seven Michelin-starred chefs and an air conditioned lounge) or just post up at the Front Porch between matches, you’re in for a treat!! 📍Rock Creek Park Tennis Center @ 16th & Kennedy Streets, NW 🎟️ Snag tickets on Seat Geek 👜 & don’t forget a clear bag! @eventsdc @rockcreeknps #cityopen #tennis #washingtondc #mubadalacitidcopen #thingstododc by @dc.everafter
