Design session. A moodboard created with the client as a co-creator
When we develop the visual identity in the studio, we don’t jump straight into building a moodboard based only on the brand strategy

Instead, we run a separate design session first
How it works: We prepare a Figma board in advance with references for every part of the visual identity:
typography (fonts), logos, colors, photography style, and graphic elements
Then, together with the client and their team, we go through each section:
what feels right, what doesn’t, and — most importantly — why
Based on this feedback, we build the moodboard
This session helps us get fully aligned and makes the client an active participant in the creative process — not just an observer by @dcb.brand
The 7 Strategic Approaches to Brand Naming What do names like Google, Nike, and Patagonia have in common? Each is the result of a deliberate strategic choice. Behind every strong brand name lies a clear methodology. Here are the seven key naming approaches used by branding agencies to build iconic identities 1. Descriptive The name directly states what the company does or offers • Example: Booking.com • Best for: Achieving instant category clarity and communicating core value simply 2. Evocative The name conjures an image, emotion, or metaphor, creating an association beyond the product itself. • Example: Zoom • Best for: Building a rich brand world and forging a deep emotional connection with the audience 3. Coined / Invented A completely new word with no prior meaning. • Example: Google, Spotify • Best for: Ensuring 100% uniqueness, trademark availability, and owning a unique brand asset 4. Compound Formed by combining two or more existing words • Example: Facebook • Best for: Balancing familiarity with distinctiveness, and hinting at a brand benefit or function 5. Acronym A name derived from initial letters or a shortened form • Example: IBM, KFC • Best for: Legacy brands, complex corporate names, or creating a scalable, systematic identity 6. Eponymous Based on the name of a founder or key individual. • Example: Ford, Disney, Chanel, Tesla • Best for: Brands where the founder’s story, credibility, or persona is central to the brand narrative 7. Geographic Rooted in a specific location, region, or sense of place • Example: Patagonia • Best for: Highlighting heritage, origin, or a specific attribute associated with a place Remember: The goal isn’t to simply pick a category. The goal is to choose a name that becomes an indispensable part of your brand strategy—carrying its meaning, values, and promise to your audience by @dcb.brand
Naming Development: Practical Advice from a Brand Strategist & Creative Director When developing a brand name, remember this fundamental principle: a name never works in isolation A name is only ever revealed and amplified through: • Brand strategy • Visual identity • Tone of voice and messaging • The contexts where the brand lives (digital, physical, media, product) That’s why powerful naming is never just a word—it’s part of an ecosystem. A system designed to let the name grow, adapt, and scale over time Key considerations before finalizing your choice 1. Sound & Phonetics • Does it sound natural and intuitive to your target audience? • Crucial for international brands: Sounds and rhythm are perceived differently across languages. 2. Real-World Usability • How does it fit into everyday language? Test it in natural phrases: • “Let’s check out [Name].” • “I just subscribed to [Name].” • “I work at [Name].” • If it’s awkward to pronounce, decline, or use in a sentence, it creates unnecessary friction. 3. Cultural & Semantic Fit • Does it carry any unintended negative, odd, or slang connotations in your key markets? • Pro tip: Test with native speakers in each region, not just translators. 4. Competitive Landscape • Are there existing brands in your category (or adjacent ones) with names that are too similar? You need clear auditory and visual separation. 5. Legal Viability (The Gatekeeper) • Is the name available for trademark registration in your target countries and classes? 6. Digital Footprint • Domain availability: Is the .com or relevant domain obtainable? • Social handles: Are consistent handles free on key platforms? • App stores: Are there similarly named apps that could cause confusion? In short, a strong brand name must: • Sound like it belongs in your audience’s world. • Roll off the tongue effortlessly in speech. • Have the flexibility to scale with your brand’s evolution. • Be understood with clarity by both your team and your customers. by @dcb.brand
How to Maintain Brand Consistency in Special Projects When launching a special project — brands face a common tension: how to make it feel fresh and distinctive To ensure your next special project amplifies your brand, anchor it in these key principles 1. Strategy First Start with the foundational question: What is this project for? A special project must advance your brand’s core idea and support its strategic positioning 2. Evolve the Visual Code A special project can — and should — have its own distinct visual flavor. But it must remain a recognizable chapter of your brand’s story Preserve and reinterpret your core design DNA: — Color logic — Typography hierarchy — Key graphic elements or compositional principles 3. Maintain a Consistent Voice Your brand’s personality shouldn’t change with the medium. A consistent tone of voice is a non-negotiable thread of recognition 4. Clarify Brand Architecture & Naming Upfront Before design begins, define the project’s place in your brand ecosystem: Is this a sub-brand, a campaign, or a limited-time initiative? Is the name permanent or temporary? A clear structural and naming strategy prevents confusion and ensures the project logically integrates into the larger brand narrative 5. Plan for Integration, Not Isolation No project should live in a vacuum. Plan from the start: How will it be featured across core brand channels? What content will support and explain it? Seamless integration turns a project from a side note into a central brand moment A powerful special project is not a separate universe. It is a strategic extension of the brand into a new space by @dcb.brand
Visuals are a reflection of meaning At DCB, we believe design works only when it’s rooted in a clear idea and shared values Through a New Year’s case, we show how meaning can — and should — be embedded into visual solutions New Year special project “Close” In 2025, we created a special project together with artist Anya Tenenbaum @pearpiecrumbs and our graphic design team. “Close” is a project about care and a sense of closeness, even across distances It’s a symbol of warmth and joy that we share with one another during the holidays The project included: — New Year greeting cards — social media visuals — a dedicated website where we раскрыли ключевой смысл проекта (oops need English) — custom emojis for social media The most valuable part was seeing people share the illustrations with each other and use them across different formats and platforms The project turned out to be truly relatable and meaningful — for us and for the people it was created for This is the kind of work we love: projects where visuals become a living carrier of meaning and bring people together 🤍 by @dcb.brand
