On October 6th, in “Vancouver,” we confronted the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and their investments in weapons, war crimes/genocide, the climate crisis, fossil fuels, and its continued investment in companies that violate Indigenous sovereignty.

CPPIB manages the $647-billion CPP. Every working and retired Canadian outside of Quebec is a member of the CPP. But despite being a Crown corporation, CPPIB has no Indigenous rights framework for its investment portfolio.

In 2016, the CPP Investment Board (CPPIB) announced they had added human rights as a focus area for determining investment decisions. If human rights are an important consideration, how can CPPIB invest $54 billion of our pension funds in weapons manufacturers and other companies violating international law and complicit in the slaughter of people in Gaza?

How does the CPP address the risk of complicity in investments tied to Israeli war crimes and illegal settlements, especially in light of ongoing legal proceedings against the Irish Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) for similar investments?

Some investors, such as the Norwegian Government Pension Fund, developed investment exclusion criteria for companies that facilitate violations of international law in conflict-affected and high-risk regions.

In 2021, responding to a letter signed by over 70 organizations and 5,600 individuals urging the CPPIB to divest from companies listed in the UN database as complicit in Israeli war crimes, CPP promised in writing to review the portfolio. A year later at the 2022 public meeting here in Vancouver it was pointed out CPPIB had not fulfilled that promise. In 2024, still this promise has not been fulfilled. And now, again in 2026.

While CPPIB claims it’s committed to responsible investing, including a 2022 commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in 2026 CPPIB has tossed out it’s net-zero emissions commitment completely.

it was a beautiful day to be canoeing on the fraser river!🙏🏼🐟💦🙌🏼🥰 to & fro wellington park point to ladner dock.

i was honoured to be part of @honouringourgrandmothers healing journey, led by artist, @hope.spence.art spence, again yesterday. lovely to meet people & spend the day with them.

incredible lifetime chance, to be paddling together in a 16-person canoe, following the salmon home with the grandmothers. thrilled to be able to bring my own grandmothers along, as well.

it felt to me, like i was far far away from the city. the beauty was awe-inspiring. it was the trip of a lifetime.

heartbreaking to learn that musqueam, and other coast salish youth, have never had the opportunity to canoe on the river. may this be rectified!

nadine asked, how are youth supposed to protect & care for these waters, if they never have access to them? by @dcbreathes

Honouring Our Grandmothers Healing Journey is returning to where we started. Following the wild salmon home, paddling in a canoe up river from Delta is an important part of the journey. There is no better way of feeling that spiritual, emotional and physical movement, than being with the lands and water with old and new friends. It warms our hearts seeing our new friends and family help where they can, by caringly taking a special sacred responsibility of ours forward in beautiful way. Walking, carrying and pulling a canoe to honour the Grandmothers, wild salmon, waters and ancestors with us is powerful.

Thank you Michelle, Naomi and Jasmine your always the greatest help and support. Carly wow great heart to get this all together including your family. Skipper, Nathan thanks for your guidance and strength, we loved seeing your family there. Always by my side Granddaughter and Atheana thank you. Hugs Donna for your supprt. Nova thank you for painting the 13th Honouring Our Grandmothers Healing Journey chest very special its from a Musqueam person.

Did you know we had exactly 13 people on the canoe with the chest. Love it thank you everyone. Remember dinner on September 27th at 5 in New Westminster you are so welcome to join us.

today! @retiredteachersdivestbc joined the Boycott Israeli Wines action led by @cpavancouver. End complicity in genocide!

from @cpavancouver:
“If the Canadian govt is serious about its intention to restrict trade on goods from Israeli settlements, it’s not difficult! You can start by banning Israeli wines now! Or is this announcement just “symbolic”, as some British diplomats have already reportedly said.

As a solidarity group that has been active for almost two decades in boycotting/banning Israeli wines, we are not moved by all this hoopla over the Canadian government’s apparent declaration to “ban settlement goods”. Firstly, Minister Anand’s statement only “confirm(ed) their intention to introduce national and/or support European restrictions on trade in goods with settlements which are illegal under international law”.

Secondly, if the timeline on labelling settlement wines correctly was any indication, we will be waiting a long time for any action from the federal government. After nine years, it is still unclear how, when and if these wines (apparently illegal even by longstanding Canadian policy) should be labelled as such.

Even if the government followed through in a timely manner, this small measure is woefully inadequate in addressing the current war crimes and genocide being perpetrated by Israel. Many are questioning if all the fanfare around this is intended simply as a distraction from the ongoing complicity of many Western governments and Israel’s culpability.” taken in Vancouver - Unceeded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Territory by @dcbreathes
