I always joke about catching a 6 pound smallmouth when the boys and I are up in the Northwoods. This certainly didn't seem like the weekend to do it, with many lakes being in the middle of the spawn or even post spawn.

Turner and I decided to give a big fish lake a shot Sunday morning after getting beaten down by a bunch of 2 pound males the entire weekend. We've really dialed in the scoping game on this particular lake over the last few summers because it seems to be what works best out there.

First fish of the day was a healthy 5.05. We quickly realized these fish were in a bitey mood. They chased just about every bait we threw at them. Soon after the first fish, I switched to one of my hand tied hair jigs and slow rolled it over a rock lip where some were sitting. Several fish immediately pulled off of it and the hair got chowed. I saw it come up to the surface and knew it was a good one. Once in the net, I figured it was a low 6. This prespawn female weighed in at 6.15lbs x 20.75" long.

I've become somewhat numb to 5-6 pound smallmouth with the amount I fish the Great Lakes (I know, this is terrible to say). While a 6 pounder is a giant in my book, it didn't feel quite that crazy. I needed to remind myself how rare a 6 pound caliber fish is in the Northwoods. They are absolutely there, but having the chance to tangle with them is few and far between. Talk about a real surprise.

As I write this, I'm reminding myself to have perspective- something I often lack in fishing and in life. Living and breathing fishing makes you forget to appreciate a giant fish, a great bite, or the ability to spend time on the water. It's all about perspective.

You can still bet I'm searching for that 7 pounder, and better yet, maybe it will happen in northern wisco some day! By far the greatest colors a smallmouth could have- that Northwoods red.

Day 1 of the 2025 SBOBT is in the books. 24lbs 7oz is good for a spot at 39th. Couldn't find any true kickers, but @sam_kicera and I had a day crackin on em! Time to swing and see what we can make happen tomorrow in the AM. by @dcbronzies

The smallmouth feed bag IS ON! Got on the craziest minnow bite I've ever experienced (thanks to @epaetzoldfishing )- 6" minnows were on the menu and the fish would fire 10+ ft off the bottom to chow. Stayed dry all day with the @simmsfishing suit. Let the fun part of fall begin🤘🏼 by @dcbronzies

Maybe I should actually target these bad boys more often? Seems like they always end up as a by-catch, but I certainly can't complain. Dirt thirt hits the deck🫡 by @dcbronzies

Always love hunting the brown ones and breaking down new water. Those boys can't hide, but you don't always run into the giants! Wrangled this one up on the @castagaintackle Ringer football jig⛽️ by @dcbronzies

Stout Canadian pike that chowed the 7/8 banger in a cabbage bed, making me think it was a musky after quite a draught. Safe to say I wasn't too happy intially...🤣 by @dcbronzies

Finally caught my first musky while actually targeting them. Crazy fun week dedicating a bunch of time to learning Canadian muskies and their habits.

I picked up musky fishing last summer because I was looking for a new challenge- it has certainly been that to say the least, but has been a blast.

Thanks to Garrett for showing us the ropes on Eagle and Brody for the invite! Very tough week of fishing, but it was incredible to see these beasts interact boatside. I have a feeling I'll be back. Might have developed another species addiction. by @dcbronzies
