This year has been...tough, and I was harshly reminded how precious and precarious life can be. My best friend was taken from us by the most random ("sporadic") disease that, in four months, robbed her of her faculties, physical and mental, day by day. She refused to go without a fight though, and I thank her for fighting so long to let me have more time with her. She has always been my protector, my confidant, my daily reminder to smile even when you've convinced yourself that your world is ending. She was kind, patient, forgiving, self-conscious, timid, passionate, and a peacekeeper. If you and I have ever met, I truly hope that I practiced the kindness, curiosity, and empathy that I learned from my mother with you.

Today would've marked mom's 65th birthday. She was diagnosed with CJD officially on 9/17/24, and succumbed to the disease a month later. CJD Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease is a rare, rapidly progressive, fatal brain disorder caused by abnormal prion proteins that lead to severe neurological decline and dementia, sometimes leading to Parkinson's as well. Mom dealt with it in stride, knowing her fate, and managed to maintain her humor throughout. Last September 23rd, she was treated like a queen, and I hope she felt as such. Life can be random and straight-up cruel sometimes, but I hope there's a heaven somewhere and I'm doing her proud as best I can. She liked the sentiment of "Play On" by Carrie Underwood during her last burst of energy last year. If you're seeing this, thanks for letting me share this with you. October feels like yesterday, every day still. Mom was the kindest, most gentle peacekeeper that ever was, and my hero. I miss her every day, today especially. Life is random and unfair, but she would urge me to find a bright side and purpose to anything, perhaps even this. So if anything, this is a reminder from me to please call your mom ♥️ by @dcmorsecode
