Recap of a very country weekend getaway. 🇺🇸 by @dcreynolds90
As Lancaster County’s oldest structure, the Hans Herr House stands as a premier example of early Germanic vernacular architecture in colonial America. The one-and-a-half-story structure is constructed from heavy random sandstone rubble reinforced by robust corner quoins, featuring an asymmetrical facade, small window apertures, and a characteristically steep gable roof. Rather than following the symmetrical, end-chimney traditions of contemporary English colonial styles, its interior layout adheres to the traditional Central European Flurküchenhaus (entry-kitchen house) floor plan organized around a massive, heat-retaining central chimney. Architecturally significant, it offers rare physical evidence of medieval European building techniques—such as its exposed log joists and interior paling insulation—transplanted directly onto the early Pennsylvania frontier. #americanhistory #architecturehistory #lancaster #pennsylvania by @dcreynolds90

Historic Huntley survives as a unique 19th century complex. Functioning as an early country “villa”, the structure boasts sophisticated geometric proportions, neoclassical revival features and motifs, and a form that amalgamates ancient Greek, Georgian, and Federal gestures. When considered together, these factors make Huntley an important architectural landmark with ties to the founding of the nation. by @dcreynolds90

The Henry Whitfield House, c.1639, is the oldest stone house in New England and one of the oldest surviving buildings in the United States. Its architecture reflects medieval English influences characterized by thick stone walls, a steeply pitched gabled roof, and asymmetrical elevations prioritizing practicality over style. The overall ensemble emulates the structures of the Cotswolds area in England from where the builder, Henry Whitfield, originated. by @dcreynolds90
