Yesterday saw us pass the 100 mark of Combat Base black belts in the UK.
Crazy to think that back in January 2000 when we formed Combat Base I don’t think there were any homegrown black belts in the UK at all. This is testament to the hard work of everyone in Combat Base and especially to the OGs who saw something in the way we were trying to operate which was a bit different to the big groups. Why join an established team when you can start your own and carve your own way. Too many people to thank but Ryan Hunter, Pete Guest, Cheryl Harris, Steve Muckle, Spenna and Danny Mitchell deserve a special mention for all the early support, as well as Chris Haueter inspiring us that the path you take doesn’t have to be the same one that everyone else took.
So proud of each and every one of you.
And we ain’t finished yet! #combatbase by @dcurrie66

On a tangent but The Damned are probably the best band ever however a clip from from the seminar last night, shout out to @chrishaueter96 for showing me the “smash the junk” pass 20 years ago that we recycled into this heel hook entry amongst other things #combatbase by @dcurrie66

Absolute pleasure to catch up with a few of our clubs over at @chokdee.gym last night, made all the more special being able to promote 3 solid grapplers to the rank of black belt. Over 50 years training, competing and coaching experience between them, so I guess it was time. Congrats to @didsy_ @dpinchbeck and @richcadden so proud of you all.

Hi, Helen here, I don’t usually do all this social media shite but wanted to publicly congratulate Cheryl on her much deserved black belt last night. I first met Cheryl when Darren organised a fight between us when he used to do the behind closed doors MMA matches back in the day. After the match we got talking and she wanted to come and train with us. Since then she has been one of my main training partners, always very tenacious and relentless, a tough competitor but very humble. We have shared many stories which led her from being a training partner into a valued friend, part of the family. I am truly proud of her but then again, we all are. Helen X by @dcurrie66

Had a fun couple of weeks travelling round a few places and awesome to see new black belts being awarded to add to our ranks.
Adam Raine, Chris Campbell and Lee Carr promoted in Northumberland, Tom and Callum Mullen promoted in Bradford, Tim Grayson and Penny Townsend promoted in Leicester then Emma Thompson and Cheryl Harris promoted in Wakefield. Crazy to think that between them there is over 100 years experience. The level of performance and coaching continues to amaze me. So proud of all our guys and privileged to be part of their story #combatbase by @dcurrie66

At Chokdee Academy in York, we are hosting a 2-hour masterclass led by the ultimate husband-and-wife pioneer duo of British BJJ: Darren & Helen Currie.

As the head coaches and founders of Combat Base UK and Combat Base Worldwide, Darren and Helen have shaped the landscape of UK grappling since January 2000. This is your chance to learn directly from Chris Haueter lineage black belts—including Helen Currie, the UK's first-ever female BJJ Black Belt.

Whether you want to sharpen your tournament game, tighten your fundamentals, or network with the best practitioners across North and East Yorkshire, this mat is where you need to be.

📅 THE DETAILS

When: Thursday, July 16th

Time: 6:30 PM until 8:30 / 9:00 PM (2+ hours of world-class instruction & rolling)

Where: Chokdee Academy, Unit 24 Rose Ave, Nether Poppleton, York YO26 6RR

Eligibility: Open to all affiliations, belt levels, and academies.

💰 THE INVESTMENT

We are keeping this accessible to ensure the entire Yorkshire community can share the mats:

Combat Base Members: £20

Non-Members / Guests: £25

⚠️ STRICTLY LIMITED MAT SPACE: To maintain the quality of instruction and ensure everyone gets ample training room on the Chokdee mats, spaces are capped. This will sell out.

📲 HOW TO BOOK

Secure your spot immediately. Drop a message to your coach, DM this page, or contact Chokdee Academy directly to get your name on the register.

Let's share some knowledge, bridge the regional gap, and elevate Yorkshire Jiu-Jitsu together. See you on the mats! 🥋🔥 taken in Chokdee Martial Arts Academy by @dcurrie66

I don’t do this instagram thing but here goes.

Was my absolute pleasure to promote Jo to purple and Lucy to black. Both have trained with me a long time.

Jo is tenacious and motivated to keep improving even though it’s a struggle sometimes but nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

Lucy has trained, competed and coached for a long time so it was an easy promotion really.

Another uk female black belt promoted by a uk female black belt is pretty cool. Apart from my first female black belt @cazskj don’t know if there’s any more.

Very proud of both.
