RISE

I was inspired to create this project during the 2020 shut down as an expression of resilience.

Things were so unknown at that time, especially for us performance artists. I wanted to provide an experience for the artist to be together + create despite the state of the world.

It started with the lighting idea which I had no idea how to achieve. Luckily Tom is the best collaborator in the world, truly!

We got access to a huge venue (can’t share where because the manager let us use it in the low) which helped us achieve the depth of darkness look.

Davry + I were driving around one day around that time + I played Envision…we were like yupppp this the song!

On set, the dancers freestyled to individual music choices. Davry + I prepped duo material in advance + the trio choreography was an excerpt by me from the 2019 Breaking Barriers rep.

It came together in such a natural way, I am forever in love with this project.

It’s not every day you’re featured in a book about the history of Ballroom ✨🏳️‍🌈

I’m incredibly grateful to author Michael Roberson ( @kingmaasai7 ) , Mikelle Street, and Designer & Photo Editor @timpalincreative for the opportunity, the feature, and the process that went into its creation.

Three years ago, I began a project called 100 Images of Ballroom—a visual journey capturing the essence of Mainstream, Mini, and Kiki Balls across Denver, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. The images selected for this feature highlight the distinct brilliance, power, and creativity that make Ballroom an iconic cultural force.

Most importantly, thank you to the Ballroom community for laying the foundation of so much of what makes us—and our culture—what it is today. Thank you for allowing me the honor of capturing you.
