“The Colored Museum,” by George C. Wolfe, contains many quotes that I often reference in conversation and reflect on. One of them being, “God created Black people and Black people created style.”

This year’s MET Gala theme, “Superfine Tailoring: Black Style,” highlights the role Black Americans have in influencing fashion, with a nod to the movement of Black Dandyism.

At its core, Dandyism represents radical self-expression, a rebellion against societal norms and most importantly - Black Excellence in the face of adversity. Freedom, joy, pain and escapism from “yesterday’s pain” can be expressed and exist in sartorial harmony.

When I put together outfits for an event, self-expression, sharp shoes and quality tailoring are always at the forefront of my mind.

For night one of this year’s #whcd weekend this year, I mixed high and low — a Banana Republic tuxedo, Club Monaco shirt, Dior bag, and a vintage Saint Laurent cummerbund corset.

The look was inspired by some of my favorite runway moments but also by the men in my family, some of the dandiest men I know.

Every day is to be celebrated and an excuse to wear clothes that you love, but I always love dressing for events by @dcmagazine, especially during correspondents’ weekend.

As the late, great Andre Leon Talley once shared “Wearing clothes should be a personal narrative of emotion,” “I don’t tear down,” and most importantly - “Be kind. Smile”

A very special thanks to @michael.mccarthy11 for my September feature in Modern Luxury and @theundergroundattic for making sure my corset arrived in time for my favorite weekend of the year.

I’m honored to be named as one of @washingtonianmag’s 2024 Style Setters, their annual look at some of the city’s most stylish people.

The only style tip that I truly abide by is from B. Smith, “Whatever you do, do it with style.” Life is meant to be lived, so why not do it in your favorite clothes?

Romanticize your life—slip into silk pajamas just to lounge in the house.

Be the main character—wear a runway piece to the office.

Have fun—dance the night away in nice shoes and clean the stains off in the morning.

Wear whatever makes you feel good, and be yourself.

Trends come and go, and your style evolves with time, but at the end of the day, you can be no one but yourself, so always choose clothes that are a reflection of you.
