Look at Mary. Isn’t she lovely? She is standing sentry in an old grotto on a rocky outcropping on the bay near Letterfrack, Ireland. The stations of the cross are there, as well as a crypt with little retablos and other statuary. For this Protestant girl in a Catholic land, she’s provided a beautiful backdrop to contemplate Maundy Thursday. Maundy is an ancient word related to ‘mandate’ that reminds us that on this night Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another. How beautiful. How simple.
