There Is a River chronicles the times of Black resistance with feeling, with urgent meaning for our time.

With lyrical prose and a prophetic urgency, Vincent Harding’s There Is a River arrived at a time where a serious reckoning with the Black freedom movement and the discipline of history required a reassessment of how deep Black resistance was.

The result of years of study and organizing within the Institute of the Black World, the word becomes flesh in an account that places you in the midst of a people who never backed down. It is a chronicle of the arrival of enslaved Africans to the US and of their struggle to destroy those terms of their arrival: the institution of slavery.

The river is a metaphor bespeaking their ever-constant drive to undo that which desired their undoing. A river never stops flowing, though it can curve and freeze and acquire new earthly elements along its way.

In the nineteenth century, Black struggle was all of this. And in Harding’s words, we learn of the names of ancestors, as well as those whose names have been lost but whose memories of what it took to be free still guide the river’s movement.

These words register a radical hope that refuses naivete about all that it took. What it still takes.

The arrival of Marcus Gilmore’s (@drummerslams) Journey to the New is something like a spiritual renewal.

It seems right that Marcus Gilmore’s first release as solo leader would come at the iconic Village Vanguard (@vanguardjazz). It also doesn’t feel like a stretch to say that Gilmore is universally beloved on the scene, which makes this record not only welcome because of some sense of finally having it, but because it reflects back to us a bit of what that camaraderie and affection feels like when it’s translated sonically.

If, as the album’s title suggests, this is a record of the new, then it defines it as structured around a renewed belief in human connection, where knowing one another is not abstracted through the kinds of knowledges that come from our reliance on distance, through screens and the like.

If you are at the Vanguard, there is not much else there, save the closeness and intimacy of these vibrations. Across a program of mostly his and other band members’ originals and Geri Allen’s “Open Handed Reach,” which she first recorded with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gilmore’s debut offers this expression of a loving gesture, having felt it in real time and over a life’s time.

We experience this as new because ashe, the force that makes us, exists inside the drum. It is no trifling matter.
