Aisha Ahmadu grew up in Zogarawa, Kano State, as one of the brightest girls in her primary school. Her parents never went to school, but she dreamed of studying science and becoming a doctor.

At 17, just days after graduating top of her class, her father married her off to his friend’s son instead of letting her sit her high school entrance exam. Now 21 and a mother of two, she isn’t allowed to return to school, but she is determined that her children will get the education she lost.

No girl’s education should be traded for a wedding.

The Dear Daughter of Mine Collective is fundraising to fully fund one year of education for 50 girls in vulnerable communities in Nigeria, so more girls like Aisha stay in classrooms, not child marriages.

In Nigeria, nearly 4 in 10 girls are married before they turn 18. That’s more than 24 million girls and women whose childhoods were cut short by child marriage, not by choice.

Recently, authorities in Zamfara State arranged a mass wedding for 200 female orphans to men they hardly knew or possibly didn’t know. When the people in power choose marriage as a “solution” to poverty, they become complicit in the harm done to these girls.

The Dear Daughter of Mine Collective is working to change this story by fully funding one year of school for 50 girls in vulnerable communities– girls on the edge of being pulled out of school or pushed into early marriage due to inherent misogynistic cultural norms and economic instability that makes it difficult for these girls to reach for education as an escape.

We’re asking you to use your voice and your resources to help give that same privilege to a girl who may lose it.
