“I knew that I might face a choice in which I either had to write the book that I needed to write, or write a book that they could be perfectly happy with. And I was always going to choose the former,” journalist Patrick Radden Keefe explains about his friendship with the Brettler family.

Patrick Radden Keefe weaves together deeply personal, often true-crime stories with broader social and political developments, using them to offer a diagnose of our times. A compelling example is his most recent book, London Falling. Following the mysterious death of a British teenager, Zac Brettler. It emerges that the boy had been leading a double life, posing as the heir to a Russian oligarch.

Has diversity become a dirty word? As diversity and inclusion policies face growing criticism, what is really at stake? And can the original idea behind diversity offer a way forward?

Berkeley law professor David B. Oppenheimer joins UvA scholar Ivana Isailović, former MEP Samira Rafaela and journalist Tammie Schoots to discuss the history and future of diversity. From accusations of discrimination to ‘diversity washing’, they explore the arguments behind the backlash and the diversity principle itself.

“If an artist is saying: does it look good? Then you shouldn't be doing it. It's got to be much more fundamental,” William Kentridge explains.

William Kentridge is one of the most prominent artists of our time. His work spans charcoal drawings, animation, film, theatre and opera. A multifaceted body of work in which his distinctive artistic signature nevertheless always remains clearly visible. Kentridge’s work often reflects on the political history of South Africa and has been exhibited around the world, most recently in Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum, Eye and the Holland Festival.

In his hometown of Johannesburg, Kentridge founded the Centre for the Less Good Idea, an interdisciplinary art studio catering to hundreds of local artists that are given the opportunity to experiment and fail. ‘A safe place to do stupid things’, according to Kentridge. A space where less good ideas can grow. Because they are the ones that often turn out to have the greatest potential.

Is menstruatiemeten weten?

How do you report on Russia when working from within the country has become increasingly difficult? And how do journalists uncover the covert operations playing out beyond its borders?

The Guardian correspondents Shaun Walker and Pjotr Sauer discuss reporting on Russia today, the war in Ukraine and Putin’s tactics of sabotage. Drawing on years of experience in Moscow and Walker’s latest book ‘The Illegals’, they explore what it takes to investigate a country whose actions are increasingly difficult to see from the outside.
