Plot twist: the most confusing thing I’ve read this year wasn’t a thriller.

It was my own hormones.

I was completely blindsided by perimenopause and, judging by the conversations I’ve had since, a lot of us are wandering around thinking we’re losing the plot when really we’re just wildly undereducated about what’s happening to our bodies.

Let’s talk about it.

Two girls go missing in a small town… and somehow that’s not even the most concerning part.

We Are All Guilty Here is peak ā€œeveryone is lying and I don’t trust a single one of youā€ energy and I loved it.

Set in North Falls, where ā€œnothing ever happensā€ (🚩), this starts with a disappearance and quickly spirals into a full town-wide unravelling. Secrets, dodgy behaviour, and just enough tension that you’re constantly side-eyeing every character.

Emmy is a great lead, messy, human, and way too personally involved to keep any emotional distance from the case. Which obviously makes everything worse.

It’s more of a slow burn than full chaos, but the tension is always there, quietly building until things start clicking into place.

Not quite Pretty Girls level dark, but still deals with heavy themes, so check triggers.

Messy, tense, and full of people making terrible decisions.

Exactly what you want.

Grief is one thing… grief with posthumous letters from your dead mother is something else entirely.

Love, Mom throws you straight into Mackenzie’s world, where her bestselling-author mother dies under suspicious circumstances, and then the letters start arriving.

Pages from a diary. Signed off like nothing is wrong. And suddenly everything Mackenzie thought she knew about her family starts falling apart.

This is a fast, chaotic thriller that thrives on short chapters, constant reveals, and that slightly feral ā€œI’ll just read one moreā€ energy.

I’ll be honest, some of the twists I saw coming. A few sit in familiar territory if you read a lot of thrillers.

But it didn’t matter, because the pacing is relentless and the whole thing is just very easy to get swept up in.

Mackenzie also works really well as a main character — she feels grounded, reactive, and not written as the usual naïve FMC you sometimes get in this genre.

It’s dramatic, addictive, a bit unhinged in premise, and perfect if you want something you can devour in a couple of sittings.

Not groundbreaking. But very entertaining.

What if the life you’ve been romanticising online… became your reality?

Not the aesthetic version. The real one.

Yesteryear is one of the most polarising books I’ve read in a while, and I completely get why. It’s dark, uncomfortable, and very deliberately messy.

For me, it felt like a sharp look at the trad-wife aesthetic and the pressure of performing a ā€œperfectā€ life — all image, control, and identity — and what happens when that illusion starts to crack.

Natalie is deeply unlikeable — honestly, no one in this book is particularly redeemable — but that’s what makes it so compelling. You’re watching everything unravel in real time and you can’t look away.

It’s unsettling, addictive, and full of things to unpack. The kind of book that lingers after you’ve finished it.

Not a comfortable read. But a very good one.

A heatwave in London, a stranded whale in the Thames, and a group of people quietly falling apart over one very chaotic weekend.

Evenings and Weekends was completely outside my usual genre… and I still really enjoyed it.

It follows Maggie, Ed, and Phil, three deeply relatable, slightly messy people trying (and sometimes failing) to figure out life, love, and what they actually want. There are no villains here, just humans making questionable choices in 30 degree heat and even worse emotional situations.

It’s funny, awkward, uncomfortable, and weirdly nostalgic. The kind of book that makes you think about your own friendships and briefly consider texting people you absolutely shouldn’t at 1am.

Didn’t expect it to stick with me… but it did.

Also thank you to my friend Dan for recommending this to me, solid shout šŸ–¤

Eleven years ago, Meredith and her daughter Delilah vanished.

Now Delilah is back. Meredith isn’t. Which is… not comforting.

Local Woman Missing is one of those thrillers that completely hooks you. Multiple POVs, dual timelines, a neighbourhood full of secrets, and absolutely no one acting normally.

I flew through this. Proper ā€œjust one more chapterā€ energy that turned into staying up far too late because I needed answers.

Mary Kubica does what she does best, makes you suspicious of everyone. And just when you think you’ve figured it out… you probably haven’t.

The ending? Slightly ā€œokay, sure.ā€ You’ll need to suspend a bit of disbelief. But honestly, the ride there is so addictive I didn’t even mind.

Dark, twisty, and very bingeable.

So imagine women in your town started disappearing in alphabetical order… how long before you panic?

The Next Woman is tense, unsettling, and just chaotic enough to keep you hooked. A remote island, a growing list of missing women, and that creeping dread of knowing your letter might be coming.

It’s not perfect, but it’s seriously addictive. The kind of book where you have to know what’s going on, even if you trust absolutely no one.

Also not me screaming at my audiobook because my cat chose violence during the most intense moment…

Huge thank you to @tandemcollectiveuk @amazonpublishing and @carolinecorcoranwriter for the advance copy šŸ–¤

What if you could run your relationship through multiple alternate realities to see if it might finally work out?

In How It Works Out by Myriam Lacroix, the same couple is dropped into a series of strange hypotheticals: finding a baby in an alley and suddenly becoming mothers, navigating a wildly questionable CEO/employee power dynamic, or, in one particularly memorable chapter, discovering that the cure for depression might involve eating your partner.

It’s surreal, darkly funny, occasionally disturbing, and somehow still weirdly tender. Every chapter shows a different version of Myriam and Allison, and even as the scenarios get stranger (and sometimes deeply unhinged), their relationship still feels recognisable, messy, intense, frustrating, and full of those tiny moments that make love feel both wonderful and slightly unbearable.

Also, at one point one of them is a praying mantis and the other is a dog… so make of that what you will.

Took a gamble on a blind date with a book at the second-hand bookshop in Attingham Park while visiting @lowrihere_books in Shrewsbury. The clues promised crime, a suspected serial killer, a room full of bodies and a race against time… so obviously I was in.

Turns out the mystery pick was The Last 10 Seconds by Simon Kernick, which opens with a wounded ex-cop in a room of dead bodies and a missing serial killer that some very powerful people would rather stayed missing.

Honestly? Feels like the kind of chaos I enjoy.

Imagine working at a matchmaking agency that pairs people with… notable psychopathy traits.

That’s Lexie’s job in Matchmaking for Psychopaths by Tasha Coryell. But her professional life might actually be the most normal part of the story.

On her birthday she goes to dinner expecting a proposal… and instead discovers her boyfriend and her best friend are now together. In one evening she loses the two people closest to her.

Then things start getting strange. Body parts arrive in the mail. Threatening notes appear at her door. A mysterious new friend enters her life… and a dark, handsome stranger becomes convinced she’s his soulmate.

This book is dramatic, chaotic, a little ridiculous, and very entertaining. It reads like a dark romantic comedy that collided with a psychological thriller and decided to stay there.

Personally I’d call this more of an unconventional romance than a thriller, just with a slightly concerning number of disturbing parcels.

Student–teacher relationships in fiction are taboo, complicated, and deeply unsettling. I read My Dark Vanessa, Half His Age, and Tampa, same theme, completely different moral lenses. My Dark Vanessa interrogates abuse with unflinching honesty. Half His Age is detached and polarising. Tampa drops you inside the mind of a female predator and it’s horrifying… but effective. Which of these books unsettled you the most?
