Earlier this year I got to lead a small team of artists to “feather” these two lifelike Canada Geese puppets for a commercial for @navcanada.ca at @sfxstudioinc.

It was a challenging build but we had a lot of fun and worked so well as a team. Each feather was either hand dyed or painted, and woven together on four way stretch to create panels that when pieced together and stuck down would resemble the colour patterning on the geese’s bodies. The size, shape, colour and thickness of each feather was really important to determine the specific look of each panel for the most realistic likeness. We had a team of artists plucking feathers for months; arranging them on boards, airbrushing the tips, dying them, and finally hand laying them onto the stretch lace. Their necks are fur transfers, and the teeny tiny feathers around their face were all hand plucked and laid individually too. Each bird has a set of extended wings and tucked wings that are interchangeable. I think it’s safe to say we all had repetitive strain injuries in our fingers at the end of the project! 😅

Got this gorgeous oak burl coffee table for FREE on marketplace, but was looking a little worse for wear. The surface had a lot of water damage and the legs were quite wobbly. Nothing a little tlc couldn’t fix! We also wanted a drawer in the middle for our remote controls, so having saved one from a previous project, I cut the facade off one of the sides of this table and converted it into a hidden drawer. Not the easiest diy I’ll admit! It took A LOT of sanding and staining and touchups to restore to its former glory but very happy with how it turned out by @deadgood_art

SPOILER ALERT. Hands down best character in Shogun and hands down coolest piece I ever made. Severed head of Yabushige- played by the incredible Tadanobu Asano. We see this for a split second at the end of episode 10. We never actually lifecast Tadanobu as it was not going to be shot for long- so I used another head mould for this job, and had to artwork it to look as much like Tadanobu as possible. It is definitely a little wider than his actual head, but I think through paint and matching his brows and hairline I got a pretty good resemblance!
I cast the head, fabricated the gore, seamed, painted and hair punched this, which was pretty cool getting to do from start to finish.

Gave this vintage art deco vanity a second life! Cut the whole thing in half, and trimmed each one down a few inches so they were the same height as our couch. The tops needed some tlc, so sanding and bleaching a little to get rid of the water rings and staining. Added a couple coats of walnut stain- polished up the handles and they looking fresh as hell 👌🏻👌🏻
I kept the drawer in the middle for another project too which is cool. by @deadgood_art

Coming at ya with something a little different today. One of my favourite jobs to date that never made the screen! For Yellowjackets season 2, I was asked to make a trout that could be bitten into with a remove-able and resettable plug of edible fake raw fish. And the actors eating the fish were both gluten free, and vegan! Normally for such a job my go to is gelatine cause it can be dyed, sweetened, fabricated ect and you can pour it into a desired mould but with the dietary restrictions I had to get creative. I ended up making a cocktail of Agar Agar which is essentially a vegan gelatine made from seaweed- sweetened with coconut cream for that milky colour, and chopped up lychee for the clear pinkish meat, set in a tiny mould. I made the skin from rice paper and painted that with pearlescent food colours.
It was such a challenge to get the skin to blend with the silicone body of the fish and be shown on camera to have that elasticy pull when being bitten.
Making the trout itself was a whole other adventure. I wanted to mould it when fresh as when moulding a frozen fish you tend to loose a lot of detail, and as it thaws after laying the first side, flipping can get real messy. What I ended up doing was elevating it flat, halfway up a box mould and pouring to the mid level, letting cure, releasing and doing a second pour. It worked really well. Then just trial and error to get the deadener and translucency perfect 👊🏻🐟

Last week the art gods reeeeally tested me. Not an hour after I listed this guy for sale I turned around and knocked him off a table. That whole slow motion dive and grab failed me. Head smashed, Rigging broken. At least 5 hours of repair ahead of me. I actually surprised myself- There was no screaming, swearing or crying- despite the plunging sadness I was feeling. It just felt unbearably…normal. Like the thing I’d been waiting for. It’s a sad reality to face as an artist; to accept the periods of loss easily, because it is not out of the ordinary. The highs are very high and the lows are very low. Whenever I feel creatively oversaturated, in the best way possible, I revel in it. Often I even feel a weird guilt for greedily consuming those highs, but I know I shouldn’t, because It gives me fuel to handle the lows- to be able to accept, grieve and adapt faster. So, I took a deep breath, and picked up the pieces (quite literally). It was mentally exhausting, but I am happy with the result. Thankfully detailed restoration is one of my specialities 😉 If I’m completely honest, I was previously ‘apprehensive’ of the weight of the shade, so now he’s got a strong base to keep him extremely grounded. Perhaps we’ll call the whole affair a silver lining. Or rather- an astro turfed lining!

He’s back up for sale and ready to go to a good home! Share with someone you think might like him ✨

Jurassic leopard lamp made from thrifted material and parts. Inspired by those cool ceramic cheetah statue lamps you see in maximalist homes on Pinterest that I could never afford. I weighted, seamed and sealed the dino before painting, and recovered a vintage shade from old fabric. What do you think??

*WARNING GRAPHIC* fake torn belly gag for Pet Semetary Bloodlines, made this it feels like a million years ago. Handsomely modelled by the incredibly talented @emersenziffle - thankfully the SAG strikes are over and he can get back to work acting. David Duchovney not actually shown here an you believe it?
Anyways David had to be able to stand wearing this rig (naturally they filmed him lying down) so I made a super comfy easily removable corset with entrails, guts and goop. All work done at @schminkenfx
