Space X's Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg as seen in Newbury Park, California, after sunset, Aug. 7, 2023.

Much higher trajectory than last month's launch, at least to my amateur eyes. We saw a couple of shooting stars as well courtesy of the annual Perseids meteor shower. A stunning interplay of man and nature in the heavens tonight.

Lahaina—Big thanks to the crew of the Trilogy sunset cruise. The staff were friendly and kept the drinks flowing as dozens of humpback whales put on a show for us. One excited whale slapped his mammoth tail 34 times for us, a behavior called “lob tailing.” I’ve never seen it before and it was stunning to watch. The mai tai sunset skies on the cruise back to Lahaina harbor was the perfect end to the day.

Maui, Hawaiian Islands—we saw 15 whales during our morning excursion and by day’s end watched the sunset on a sweet spit of land called Baby’s Beach. Traveling with my sisters is a blast and we’re so thankful for this brief respite from the worries back home. The waters around Kihei are a bit muddy due to runoff from the recent torrential storms so we are heading north today.

VERONA— As our trip winds down to its final week my sister Chrissie and I have seen so many beautiful places, eaten wonderful regional cuisine and drank maybe a few too many Negronis. But as I think back one of my favorite things about this trip is meeting so many wonderful people along the way. Our driver Daniel took the long way into Lake Como to give us the best views. Just two days ago we stumbled onto this wacky scene in Venice where for some reason a man was wearing a Mona Lisa portrait accompanied by an older Italian woman. They were being cheered by a crowd of men. We don’t know what it was about but it sure was fun! There are the couples we have met including Maximilian and Kelly on the Verona Piazza. I bumped into Virginians Jean and Mary while touring a castle and we stopped to share tips. Another Daniel cut our hair with a big smile and panache in Bellagio. And my favorite encounter was a chance hike with Marie Sternberg at the top of a mountain in Provence. Of course we started our trip by meeting our wonderful extended family in Paris! D’AZAY-LE-RIDEAU-After hectic Paris the Loire Valley was a welcome respite. As USA travelers we only needed our CDC vax card to enter museums and restaurants. Indoor masking is strictly enforced. These restriction might seem harsh to some but it is clearly working! France is moving out of the pandemic and returning to normal life. It’s a great time to visit France—if you are vaccinated. We toured two chateaux—D’Azay-le-Rideau and Amboise Royal Castle. Both were uncrowded. In Amboise we spotted a crew filming a new TV show called “Serpent Queen.” Viva le France! RAMBOUILLET—Yesterday we reached across generations and oceans to reconnect with our French family. Our cousins live in Paris and its suburbs. We shared photos of ancestors and spoke of common dreams. And then we ate and drank and laughed for hours. They showed us their little town of Perry. And I gained a new fondness for Chartreuse on the rocks. PARIS— Paris is in the midst of an Indian summer and it seemed as if everyone took the day off work today to enjoy the rare heat spell. My sister and myself included! We walked over 10 miles today partly because we got lost at the very end but mostly because there was so much to see and do.
