what did he really say 🤔

I wanted to start a new series with my hearing husband and introduce you to Jake… but apparently, we needed a speech therapy session first. 🗯️

deaf people LOVE music too!! 🎶

🔊 when I got my cochlear implant at a young age, I had to do music therapy to teach my brain how to pick up sounds and differentiate between tones + pitches. I also learned the piano.

💿 after that, I would play my favorite CDs and pull out the little lyric booklets out of the cases (remember those?!) to read the lines over and over ….and over again until I could understand it.

🎸 my very first concert was in 2008 (the Jonas Brothers) and then I spent my entire high school savings on Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 concert 😂 no regrets btw. it still brings me so much joy. the vibrations, the energy, the outfits, the musicians, the songs, the sets and design… it’s a full sensory experience.

🎫 after high school, life got busy and I didn’t prioritize concerts anymore… until I moved to NYC. I found venues to be WAY more accessible here! it’s only made music more enjoyable.

🎤 I gotta give a shout out to @thegarden for having the BEST accessibilty team. I literally have their number on speed dial and they make sure people like me (and you) have a wonderful experience too! ✨

Hilary Duff’s set was so wholesome & nostalgic. Guess who I’ll see in two weeks……. 👀

one more for the sharks 🤙🏼🤿🦈

I love snorkeling and diving as a Deaf person because:
• I can embrace the silence without feeling like I’m missing a thing
• I can fully focus on what’s happening in front of me
• I’m constantly watching body language and subtle changes in movement

Funny enough, sharks communicate the same way.

Sharks rely heavily on body language and can also detect the tiny electrical signals produced by living animals. If a shark is curious, it may circle or approach to investigate—not because it’s hunting you, but because it’s trying to understand what you are.

If you ever want to create more space:
🫧 Stay calm and avoid splashing
👀 Keep the shark in view and maintain eye contact
🦶 If needed, gently use your fins (not your hands) to redirect them away

Most reef sharks are shy and would rather avoid us. The more you understand their behavior, the less scary they become… and the more fascinating they are!!

Nature is pretty incredible 💙

Less fear. More facts. Accessibilty starts with understanding 🧏‍♀️🦈 what else would you like to know about?

Crunchy leaves. 🍂

It was one of the very first sounds I ever heard with my cochlear implant.

I was 5 years old, and it was the beginning of autumn in Wisconsin. I stepped onto the sidewalk beneath the giant maple tree in our yard and walked across a pile of freshly fallen leaves.

Crunch.

I froze.

I looked around, completely mesmerized. What was that? Leaves make a sound?!

It’s such a small thing, but it’s one of those moments I’ll never forget.

I told Jake that story when we first started dating. 14 years later, he still goes out of his way to find the crunchiest leaf he can whenever we’re out for a walk.

Some people hear the sound of Fall.
I remember the first time I ever got to. 🥹🍂

who else likes a silent appointment? 💆‍♀️

finding the right salon is EVERYTHING.

advocate for yourself and you’ll be surprised to find people who are kinder than you think & will accommodate your needs, whether you want a silent appointment or not (or in my case, both)!
