Continuing my investigation into public domain content, this small stapled booklet concerns itself with language rather than photography. The 20 poems were found on ‘Public Domain Poetry’ and were picked at random, a response to the landing page of the website which (before it was taken down) would display a selection of random poems each time you refreshed. I ended up printing two versions, one with a blue paper cover and the other using a recycled stock (final image). The content prompted what I have come to think of as an outcome of proximity: with paper, printer and production all being chosen based on their immediate and public availability. The way in which the cover image (taken by @birdsong_in_reverse ) gets chopped off at the top and bottom is an intentional remnant of the production process – in this case, highlighting the printer’s mechanical inability to print edge-to-edge. Again, I’m using Cotham Sans (Sebastien SanFilippo) this time for pagination and the title pages, and Adobe Caslon Pro for everything else.

Some posters making use of content from @publicdomainrev. Designed initially as 4 A2’s (see images 3 & 6), which were later combined and rotated, forming two ‘new’ A1 posters with some overlaid magenta type. Bread, bodies and frogs, plus a little DIIV public service announcement. Typeset in Nitti (Adobe Fonts) and Cotham Sans (by Sebastien SanFilippo via @openfoundry).

An ephemeral tribute celebrating the second studio album from Hull’s @smellybdrmm (bdrmm). Comprised of eight 7x5-inch lyric cards, each backed with an extreme crop from a couple of images taken by @ronmcquade during a live performance. Printed on G. F. Smith Bitter Chocolate and Ice White Colourplan by @feburmanltd. Typeset in Minion Pro. Project photography (images 4 & 8) by @dag_mtl

Back in 2023, during my internship with @davidmckendrickstudio, I was fortunate to work on much of the exhibition graphics for ’Tartan’ at the V&A Dundee (1 Apr 2023 – 14 Jan 2024). Above represents a (very) small glimpse into what ended up being hundreds of different printed parts, including intro, exit, section and sub-section panels, object labels, entrance and foyer graphics, a floor-plan, glossary and acknowledgements panel.

I’m still incredibly grateful to have been brought onto the project by David McKendrick and @benmclaughlin, particularly so soon after finishing my BA. It was a real pleasure working with them both on such a typographically rich project.

John Clare’s ‘Love and Memory’ booklet, created back in 2022 for a third-year BA project – supervised by Ruth Blacksell. Heavily inspired by Damon Albarn’s album ‘The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows’ – and the art direction done for this project (OK-RM). The booklet chunks individual stanzas of Love and Memory into spreads which are paired with images of Icelandic landscapes, an important personal location for Albarn. Typeset in Minion Pro and Flood (Adobe Fonts). Public domain images originally from Pexels.
