Nine years in Bali, deported for promoting it. They say that promoting Bali without the correct visa is illegal.

The thing about the culture in Bali, the people survive on tourism, but the island has no clear direction in how they want that to play out. The Balinese are some of the most welcoming people I’ve met, yet the politics on the island can make it unnecessarily difficult for locals and foreigners to simply live and enjoy their lives alongside one another.

I truly hope Bali can grow past this uncomfortable era.

In this video is Wayan Tari Painter of Ubud (Banjar Bentyung) - a friend since my very first moments. His paintings have decorated my walls for years. Here I felt the split between our ancient past and our distant future. Knowing the state of the world today, I feel absolutely heart broken, that humans have such a heavy consequence on our Earth.

Here however, in the middle of the Arabian desert, I felt a deeper peace - knowing that either survival is possible in extreme environments or that it doesn’t even matter in the longer scale of time.

One of the harder life lessons is knowing when to gracefully be humbled. Knowing when to retreat, redirect, ask for help, or destroy the foundations of what wasn’t working in order to start again.

These words are easy. Allowing humility to sit and stay requires practiced skills. No one can tell you to let go and suddenly you know how. It’s something that must be practiced.

But having the awareness to recognise when the inner you - your ego - has been fighting too long and too hard in the wrong direction… that’s brutal inner honesty. taken in Ko Pha-ngan by @deanraphael

Creatively, I’ve been taking some time to figure out who that part of me is. It didn’t die, my life just changed, slowly - and what inspired me to create no longer pulls me.

While I take the time to figure it out, I’m trying a lot of new things. Life is full, I’m busy from waking to sleep - but while this lil part of me is yet to be found, it does feel like something is missing.

What I’ll create as art in the future is unbeknown to me. I have ideas, I have visions - but nothing is making the magnet feel undeniably strong.

It’s like having a premium toolkit, but not knowing what to do with all the tools. I don’t know, maybe I’m the tool.

Circa 2015/2016 - I was really starting to find my voice in portraiture. I was deeply inspired by David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, the depression of Melbourne winters, and the feeling of being lost in city life. I was out to prove myself to the world. I wanted to be accepted and respected. I had no reason to not create, everything was an experiment and life was really starting to improve for me, for the first time. 2016 was the last year that I lived in Australia. taken in Melbourne, Australia by @deanraphael
