We saw Diles Que No Me Maten aka They Said to Not Kill Me. Not sure how to describe them: post rock? They at times have a strong Neu! influence. So maybe post rock krautrock. I dunno. At one point, they were blowing through two clarinets, and a sax while another bowed his bass and the drummer drummed on. Going the other way, they played three guitars, a sax, bass, and drums. Turn up to hear a bit of "Outro," the last song they played that night. This drawing was done standing up and in my little sketchbook. A much needed night of beautiful music by Jon Armstrong and the Bridge to Everywhere. It was essentially the same large ensemble but led by two different composers. Drawing was difficult. In the light, green looked black and the orange was completely invisible. They came out ok though. I finished my sketchbook tonight. I've been drawing at live shows in and around LA since before covid and this is the first time I've compiled a collection my sketches. The premier volume features Angel City Jazz Festival shows from 2021 to 2025. It even features a few drawings of people who are performing this year. The booklets are 5.5 x 6 inches or so. Sizes vary since they are hand folded, trimmed and stapled by me. I will be attending Angel City Jazz Refractions on October 10 to see Jon Armstrong and Bridge to Everywhere, who is featured in the book. I will have 20 of these little guys for sale. Finally visited Baby Gee's jazz night. Tonight I saw three fourths of Red Fiction improvising. Baby Gee is really small and narrow. There is only one stool to sit and see the band and I got it. Here is a big ol' video of the three bands we saw at Open Gate hosted by Scribble. I gotta say it was an epic drawing night. .Here is a video of the Smudges/cuZns show last night. cuZns are Bobby Bradford and William Roper, on cornet (I think), tubas, and other things you blow or hit or squeeze. And voices. Always with the voices. Smudges are Jeff Gauthier and Maggie Parkins on violin and cello and effects. These two duos were both amazing and could not be further apart. Great night and met some very sweet people. Check the video for bootleg audio by me. Went with orange and brown and black. Here is my drawing of the Cymatics Trio, featuring Motoko Honda, Tony Green and Breeze Smith.
