Not sure I’m ready for TK but Leander definitely is! Just squeezing by the deadline to turn 4 by a couple of weeks, he might be a little younger than the others but he’s keeping up with the best of them. He was even the only student from TK-6th grade to volunteer to help the principal with the school-wide assembly birthday ritual 🥹 what a guy! by @dear.babe

Leander is 4! Every day he surprises, delights, and amazes me. This week he signed his name on a bday card for his friend damn near perfectly. He told my sister he knew of Hawaii, where the ukulele she gifted him was from… it’s spelled H-a-n-a-11. He knows his way around Santa Barbara. His love of dinosaurs has made way for his love of ninja turtles, and he’s ready to head to New York to meet them. He loves to jump from heights out of my comfort range, and when they’re especially butterfly-inducing, he’ll take a moment to collect himself before saying, I’m ready… Cowabunga! He gets absolutely PUMPED!, especially when friends and family visit. Our conversations, especially at bedtime, are poignant and precious. He’s had a few big transitions this summer, which he’s handled better than he needed to. And he’s still the sweetest little love there is. It is has been such a joy watching him grow over the past year, and I’m sure 4 will be just as magical. by @dear.babe

PEOPLE! It’s been Leo season and you know what that means… time to celebrate the one and only @metalteepee. To the one with the heart of gold who makes everyone feel like the sun shines on them… to the most creative person I know, whether he’s whipping up a dinner that beats any restaurant from whatever we have lying around, or coming up with some crazy-ass joke, or tossing off an incredible piece of artwork, or making Santa Barbara look a little slicker with his signs and murals… Here’s a birthday snap from Aug. 16 since we’ve been together, except one cheat at the end since my phone doesn’t have anything before November 2016 except this photo of us that Benny sent from June of that year. (A little belated because we hosted 50 people for Leander’s 4th bday on Mikey’s bday this year, and because August just does not quit.) Give this guy mucho amor for being the best ever. Ohhh the sweetness from this 3 month old. Time has gone by in the blink of a dream. And now at the end of the 4th trimester, I have a full on baby, whose smiles flow freely with laughs nipping at their heels. @metalteepee’s mini without a doubt, he has a button nose and wonder in his eyes. How lucky I am to have him as my sidekick, to have watched his eyelashes grow in and curl, to hear him discover his gentle voice, to squeeze his chubby thighs. We have been time-traveling ✨ baby boy Gavin Michael Matheson was born five weeks early on May 2. Weighing in at 6.9 lbs and 20”, he has been strong and healthy and has met the challenges of arriving early as best as we could have imagined. I have been so grateful for it all — his health, his big brother’s resilience and openness, @metalteepee’s love (and ability to handle EVERYTHING), so much great care at the hospital, and the support from the village.
