Turning the voices of the community into public art.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The Rainproof NYC Flood Map adds community knowledge to official flood data.
Official data only captures a fraction of the impact. Many flood experiences never make it onto the record at all. Through stories, we can together document a more comprehensive picture of the extent of flood impacts across NYC.

We're collecting three kinds of stories: Flooding, Actions, and Ideas.

Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking at the unveiling of @mookntaka ‘s Friends from the Canal, the newest installation in @van_alen ’s Common Build public art series.

As the 2024/25 Common Build recipient for The Dear Neighbor Project, and a member of this year’s selection committee, it was meaningful to stand on the other side of the experience and help welcome in the next artists. This year’s Common Build also extends into the surrounding small business corridors, encouraging visitors to move through Gowanus and spend time with local storefronts.

I’m grateful to Van Alen for inviting me to be part of the process, and to Mookntaka for bringing playful, generous work into the neighborhood. Friends from the Canal introduces Loofa, Pebbles, and Shelby to Gowanus as illuminated characters that show what happens when familiar street corners transform into small moments of wonder and play. Congratulations to Mookntaka on a beautiful launch. taken in Gowanus, Brooklyn, New York by @dearneighborproject

A new neighbor has arrived on Warren Street!

We’re excited to share that our illuminated sculpture is now installed at Boreum Park (364 Warren St, Brooklyn, NY 11201). This is the second of two sculptures featuring laser cut phrases from Gowanus residents’ stories.

This bright yellow house is comprised of aluminum, steel and acrylic and stands 4ft tall. These illuminated sculptures are yet another public art piece that represents a marker of memory and community for the Dear Neighbor Project.

Boreum Park, 364 Warren St, Brooklyn, NY
Park is open daily, sunrise to sunset + the sculpture is on view through mid December 2025

We invite you to swing by, and reflect on the stories that shape the places we call home.

Stories called by our wonderful journalists, @naeemdouglas_ and @seeangelee_be

Photos from last night’s guest lecture + workshop on “Mapping Memory” with the MFA Transformation Design class at Pratt Institute.

Students were invited to sketch, write and share their own experiences onto world, U.S., NYC borough maps, turning the exercise into a collective story.

We used direct quotes of resident interviews from The Dear Neighbor Project to collectively discuss the themes of change and its impact on communities.

Thank you to @caroleematt the MFA students and Pratt faculty especially for your openness and curiosity. It was an honor to guest lecture

Join us at Powerhouse Arts for the final public program of The Dear Neighbor Project. At this guided art workshop led by artist Tiffany Baker, co-create a large-scale community flood map of Gowanus based on your personal narratives.

With collage, drawings, or text, you’ll create visual stories of where you’ve lived, witnessed change, or experienced flooding in Gowanus. On a community map, place your stories alongside narratives from the project’s archive. Through live interview sessions during the workshop, you can also share your own oral stories of flooding for the archive. This workshop is best suited for adults and teens 15+. taken in Powerhouse Arts by @dearneighborproject

The Dear Neighbor Project is now on view at Powerhouse Arts through August.

This indoor exhibition is one of six sites across Gowanus where we’re sharing testimonies from neighbors living with the impacts of flooding. Scan QR codes to hear these stories directly—spoken in the voices of the people who lived them. The Dear Neighbor project is produced by @van_alen

We’re deeply grateful to the team at @powerhouse_arts for bringing this installation to life, Dennis, head of the Powerhouse Print Lab, where all signage was printed in-house with precision. And thank you to @ericshiner Eric Shiner, President of Powerhouse Arts, for welcoming the project into the lobby space.
