📖 This 1937 race would become one of the most legendary events in American motorcycle history, laying the foundation for the famous Daytona Bike Week that now attracts hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts every year. I hope I haven’t made Eddy too much of a « hero » in this painting. He was a down-to-earth guy and a talented mechanic, which is why I wanted him to remain raw and relatable. And his motorcycle, this Indian Sport Scout, while a real workhorse for its time, had to be elegant, yet exude performance and endurance.
Cheers!

Cheers!

🏁 Ed “Iron Man” Kretz, from California, wasn’t a polished racer or a child prodigy on the track. He started driving at 20 because it was his only means of transportation during the Great Depression. Then he discovered a passion and a raw talent for competition. He was a tough, resilient, and respected guy. He earned his nickname, “Iron Man,” on the track: through sheer arm strength and the ability to push through when others gave up.

In 1937, on Daytona Beach, Kretz won the very first Daytona 200, riding an Indian Sport Scout. Not on a smooth, safe circuit, but on a brutal 3.2-mile course, a mix of sand, road, and unpredictable terrain. A race where mechanics, physical strength, and mental fortitude were laid bare. So yes, in the image we see a happy man taking his victory lap. But I also wanted to illustrate the beginning of a legendary race that would lay the foundations of motorcycle competition:
👉 commitment
👉 character
👉 a true man-machine relationship

Trying to make a living from illustration is a new challenge for me. You have to produce drawings or paintings, look for clients, find outlets and other projects… On this painting, the framing is not definitive. I will move it depending on my progress. #deazmotorworks #wip #historyofmotorcycles by @deazmotorworks

Work in progress - I’ve wanted to use a city as the setting for my painting for a long time. The city never sleeps. Neither do legends. by @deazmotorworks

I had a lot of fun painting this picture. I hope you can feel the weight of the sand, the heat, the fatigue after all those miles covered.
Thank you to all these pioneers who never cease to inspire me.

Bessie, a woman who refused the limits placed on her. Free, determined, unapologetic.

It's been a while since I've posted anything. And for this comeback, I wanted to honor an incredible woman: Bessie Stringfield.
Named “The Motorcycle Queen of Miami,” Bessie Stringfield was the first Black woman to cross the United States solo on a motorcycle. Eight times. At a time when being a woman, Black, and free on the roads was already an act of resistance. A self-taught stuntwoman and messenger for the U.S. Army during World War II, Bessie faced racism and sexism head-on: closed doors, assaults, being banned from racing, police harassment… Nothing stopped her.
While her story has some ambiguities, sometimes embellished by herself, she remains a pioneer whose exploits have not been forgotten. Painting her in this way is my way of showing her courage and defiance, and of reminding us that some roads were sometimes opened at the cost of silent struggles. A tribute to those who move forward, even when the path is denied them.

Bessie Stringfield (1911–1993) ✨

I was thinking about the first aviators, the Silk Road adventurers, and the pioneers who blazed trails on land, sea, and air. I wanted to illustrate a race as an inner struggle, a self-improvement. These challenging stories fascinate me, and even if we see it less, the spirit of adventure still lives on today.

An image of the Moab desert, its rocks, its plains as far as the eye can see, this immense sky and the idea of reviving a vintage motorcycle race in the heart of this setting that becomes a character. This is all what inspired Mojave.
