July/August was truly eclectic. On my Kindle I got half way through Agatha Christie’s biography and dipped into other bits and bobs whilst travelling. I thought I’d read The Shellseekers and am old enough to remember it being a ‘big deal’. So thought, ‘I’ll read it again.’ Turned out I hadn’t read it and it’s of its time. I love the little Austin Kleon books! Very inspiring. The rest? OK, enjoyable, but nothing that stands out. What would you recommend? #bookstagram #books #reader by @deb.rainer

@curtisbrowncreative #CBCSummerStory26 #AmWriting #writersofinstagram My entry: What no one else knew about that summer was he thought of then and she thought of now.

He remembered sparrows were a key part of the orchestra, their shrill rattling sound vocal in the dawn chorus, pulling weight ‘til the final chord of evensong. Melodic blackbird duos echoed across the valley; chaffinches chattered, greenfinches drew out their notes, joining a quartet that grew to rhapsody as linnets added breaths of gorse-clad hillside and warm July days to an unconducted pastoral performance.

All paused for the heavy noon interval, before the practice of notes grew again from a slow chime; a whistle, squawk or squabble testing the scales, some tuning up, others still at rest. The evening gig rounded off with soloists competing: song thrush – ‘did he do it, did he do it, Judy did’ - versus nightingale, the shy winner plaintively celebrating in Berkeley Square long after a blanket of dusk.

Now, his granddaughter watches the red kites soar, hitting the high notes; green parrots conduct their noisy accompaniment from coniferous branches overhanging urban fences. He wonders: where is the sparrow? Some of the old cast remain, blackbird duos adjusting their melody to complement new arrivals, familiar tones from linnets pitching in with octaves and high notes, low trills and warbles adding percussion.

Both notice the ensemble still pauses for that long midday interval, before tuning up ready to enthral as the sun goes down, the kites swooping low, intent on making the last sound beyond the virtuoso. Has there already been a debut in the city? Will the original suspects still compete for the final curtain, the song thrush - ‘come out, come out’ – against the perfect pitch of the nightingale?

She borrows the binoculars.
