POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

That’s a wrap 2023 🙌🏼

We started the year living on a building site with no kitchen and no heating 🥶 Now we have a beautiful kitchen extension, new windows, shutters & doors throughout, new utility with built in dog beds, one bedroom finished (with vaulted ceiling!), a smart new home office, a fab fitted laundry cupboard, downstairs loo and a bathroom with a comfy tub and walk in shower 🤩 The garden landscaping is mostly done and the living room is 80% there. I mustn’t forget the new side roof, boiler, rads & insulation throughout too…it’s so cosy now we barely need the heating on. It’s the invisible (but bloody expensive) things like this that make the cold, dusty months most worthwhile 😀
Coming in 2024…hall, stairs & landing makeover (the last of the 70’s carpet 😢), living room alcove storage, new pantry (been looking forward to that for 2 years!) and two more bedrooms transformed. Pretty much in that order! Oh and many many many more hours in the garden 💚

Thanks for being here through the snails pace, complaining and sometimes lack of posting 😬 I promise I’ll do better this year! Look forward to sharing the ups and downs with you in 2024 🩷 by @deb_at_no27

So I finally did a reel! Thought I’d document the ‘before’ as the sea of psychedelic carpets, brown bathrooms and general feeling of living in your grandma’s house will all soon become a distant memory! 🙏🏻 Still waiting for planning permission (only a week late so far 🙄) but new windows and other jobs are starting in a couple of weeks 🎉 Will obvs be sharing all the progress!#houserenovation #followforupdates #1950shouse #1950shouserenovation #renovationreels #beforeandafterrenovation #housemakeover #housereels #interiorsaccount #renovationproject #renovations by @deb_at_no27

This week in the garden.

Now I’ve seen every season in the garden, I’ve come to the definite conclusion that it looks at it’s best in September and October 🍁 🍃🍂
I’m sure that’s no mistake given they are my favourite months! Everything is mellow after the height of summer. The skies are still blue (sometimes!) and the leaves are turning whilst the grasses glow and the verbena and gaura just keep giving.

And it’s officially autumn tomorrow. At last! Get the fire and candles lit, get your boots and scarves on. Cosy season is here!!! 🤎

How are you feeling about autumn’s arrival? Yay or nay?! by @deb_at_no27

An actual hummingbird moth in my garden!

This is a literal dream come true for me and I honestly never imagined it would happen. When the world feels like it’s falling apart, it’s little moments like this that keep us going ✨

Nature and the garden are my comfort right now. I cry too many times a day at the misery being inflicted in Gaza and the awful hatred appearing on our streets but we must keep on keeping on…

I’m making a conscious effort to take my energy out into the real world rather than online…it good to be around people who share the same worldview and values and I think it helps to look someone in the eyes rather than just share yet another video…there’s more humanity out there in real life 🙏🏼

Tomorrow I’m helping on a stall with my local Palestine Solidarity Campaign group to raise awareness of the Don’t Buy Apartheid campaign regarding boycotting Israeli produce, particularly that produced in the illegally occupied territories @northantspsc

If you see me in Northampton town centre come and say hello! They have friendly groups all over the country if you’re looking to get more involved 🇵🇸

Anyway, I hope you’re okay and that this little video brings you as much joy as it did me 🫶🏼 When I said I wanted to see a hummingbird moth in our garden when it was a bare patch just over 2 years ago, I never for a moment imagined I actually would!

I’m going to share some donation pages this week for desperate families in Gaza who need money for essentials as Israel continues to block all food and medicines entering. Please give when you can…the best way to experience joy is to share it after all ❤️ by @deb_at_no27

And just like that, the house is finished!

The driveway was the last big job on a very long list and was made more complicated by a huge pine tree with roots growing under the drive. I won’t go into the whole story but suffice to say I started talking to our local council in August of 2023 and it was just resolved a couple of months ago!

Sadly the tree had to go, I would never usually advocate for felling a mature tree but it was a choice between a useable driveway and the tree 😢 I feel better knowing I’ve planted 3 trees in our garden 💚

But, back to the happy news, the new driveway is resin bound and it is stunning! We’re on a slope so the fact it’s completely porous is a huge benefit.

We used a local company who were absolutely fantastic from beginning to end @npdiggerandpavingservices If you’re looking for a new drive, either resin or block paving, then give Neil a call. The whole team are lovely and really take pride in their work 🤩

Choosing the right colour was difficult (of course it was!) There’s a huge choice but I wanted it to look like gravel and not to be too bright, I’m very happy with our decision!

Second photo is the original Right Move listing and there’s a few showing the install process. Last picture is the base layer not the finish, I need to take a close up of the top layer because it’s beautiful 😄….I’ve just got to plant a laurel hedge on one side and I’m putting a lavender hedge the other side and the front of the house is done 🙌🏽

Looks a bit different now doesn’t it? 😍 by @deb_at_no27

Welcome to my secret shady corner seating area! Pull up a seat and let’s catch up over a cool drink 🍸

When I started planning the garden, I had lots of Pinterest ideas for this corner! It gets the last of the evening sun so I knew I wanted a little seating area but it’s at the end of the garden and not very private…I fantasised about having a sunken Mediterranean patio but the budget wouldn’t allow 🙄

I made do by creating a bank in front with the tons of earth we moved to level the ground. Then planted a line of Stipa Gigantea and other tall planting to create the feeling of being cocooned and a sense of privacy.

It’s been a couple of years now and I think I can safely say the plan has actually bloody worked! You can barely see up to the house or neighbours when you’re sitting down there and it’s really quite magical under the huge pine trees.

The garden isn’t large so I’m really pleased to have created this little corner of peace and quiet 💚

I’ll find some progress pics and put them on my stories. Is anyone interested in the process I went through to design the garden? I’ve been wondering about sharing it 🧐🥰 by @deb_at_no27

Time for the Benton Iris to shine. As soon as I saw these at Chelsea two years ago I knew I wanted them! The colour is muted and I think they look quite majestic, I’ll be sorry when they’re gone!

It’s lovely being at the stage with the garden where I can potter, prune and just ponder life 💚

Hope you’re having a restful weekend and your weather is ok? We’ve had high winds, driving rain and bright sunshine today, so a typical spring bank holiday 😁 by @deb_at_no27

A few garden shots from today and, my favourite activity, comparing them to last year and the year before!

As things are growing I can already see where I want to make changes…I tried to be super controlled about what I was buying as I wanted to keep the colour scheme muted and quite limited. I started with white then added purples then the copper Benton Susan iris had to get involved 😂 I’ve added quite a few Geum Totally Tangerine as that’s in the same ballpark so basically white, purples and muted orange/golds…

So if you can see pink, red or any other colour here then you’re going colour blind ok? 😆 No, the pink is allowed for spring only and I’ve put it all on the patio…next year I definitely won’t buy any pink 😬

Other edits will definitely involve getting rid of some plants to reduce the range down more. But I’m seeing it very much as an ongoing review rather than needing it to be ‘right’ at some point. I know, very zen right! 🧘🏼‍♀️

I even managed to go to a garden centre twice recently without buying anything…is this what being a grown up is like? 😂

Enjoy the sunny weekend 😘 by @deb_at_no27

Ooh, I know a great job for the hottest day of the year…let’s empty the log store, move it to the other end of the garden and reorganise the messy storage area!

Husband says, that sounds like a great idea babe 😁 Are there any other garden jobs you need doing? Ok, that bit is a lie 😂 But he was pretty keen (initially) and it didn’t take us too long and we only had 2 rows, one stropping off in a huff (🙋🏼‍♀️) and no tears at all 👏🏼 A good day’s work!

Stage two, oh didn’t I mention that? To make space for a new tree which just needs digging up from my parents garden and transporting to ours…2 miles by hand cart as it’s too big for the car. No I’m not f’ing joking babe 😂😂 We didn’t move the log store just for fun!

How lovely is the fuschia tree though? And look how insanely huge the new fatsia japonica have grown in less than a month! 💚 by @deb_at_no27

The greenhouse reveal…take 2 or possibly 3! 😂

We built the base for the greenhouse 2 years ago and, looking at the pictures of the state of the rest of the garden then, I have no idea at all why I was in such a hurry to get it in at that stage! 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s taken me 2 summers to know what I DON’T want to grow…and I’m finally clear on what I do want and what will work given I don’t want to heat it fully through the winter.

So really this is just it looking pretty with the massive collection of terracotta pots my husband picked up on marketplace at the weekend…don’t they look amazing! Plus the new solar overhead light that I just figured out how to hang!

All I need now is to start buying some plants (how will I cope? 😂) I want to build a collection of unusual succulents and cacti but they need to be able to survive below freezing. I’ve been researching and lots of Mexican species will be happy down to as low as -10c. So I’ve got my list and I’m ready to start filling this baby! 💚💚 Will let you know when I find my first 🌵

Thought I’d share a little garden progress! Comparing April 14th last year with today (April 7th)…I knew it was looking much greener this spring but I hadn’t realised quite how much! 😄

The euphorbias have tripled in size and are looking lush (on this side, the one on the other side is very sad!), the Stipa Gigantia are gianting! All the perennials are thriving and I can’t wait to see how it all comes together in the summer.

In February I was thinking there wouldn’t be much to do out here this year…what an idiot 😂 I’ve already done a fair bit of planting, mainly adding structure with evergreens and I’ve moved some bits around where it was looking crowded.

I’ll show you the other beds later in the week plus the new island bed is coming on nicely 💚

I had a lovely afternoon at a Yoga, Sound & Spring Wreath workshop yesterday. My bright spring feelings have been slow to arrive this year as I have to say I was still loving the slow winter vibes! But making a living wreath plus the beautiful yoga practice and crystal singing bowls definitely helped bring on the spring creativity 🌷

I’m very happy with my wreath and it will last a good couple of months, there are spring bulbs in there plus a tiny viola 💜

I’m also still loving my tiny porch makeover, it makes such a difference to have a place for everything I need when I’m leaving the house with the dogs.
