Dr. Katherine “KC” Clark, an OB-GYN, and her husband, Chris Kocher, a business consultant, came from San Francisco visiting their two grown sons in New York City and made the trek out to New Suffolk for two days—a big effort, and deeply appreciated.

Years ago, I hired KC to work with women in my pre- and postnatal exercise classes. I deliberately built teams of women who knew far more than I did about pregnancy and delivery, and together we taught in studios throughout San Francisco. It was wonderful to see them—probably among my oldest friends whom I’m still in touch with. 👯 by @deb_colitti

At Ray and Kelly’s beautiful wedding, they made space for the people we carry with us—the ones we wish could have been there in person.

Seeing my mother, Candy, Cindy, Gary Levine, and Wes Talbot together in this loving tribute stopped me for a moment. Thank you, Kelly and Ray for honoring them. They are missed, remembered, and still very much part of our family story. ❤️ taken in Bedford Post Inn by @deb_colitti

My Unlikely Trinity -
Rhoda, Dolly & Gloria

Yesterday at noon, my 102-year-old friend Rhoda Dickler passed away.
She lived a life that spanned more than a century. Each decade brought its own experiences, its own chapters, and an entirely new version of the world. Rhoda lived through all of it.

At the end, she was terribly depleted. Her body had almost entirely failed her, and yet, when she was awake, she was still there. Still with it. Still Rhoda. That was the amazing part, and also the hard part.

Today, her body finally let her go.

Rhoda’s death comes within days of the passing of Gloria Steinem and Dolly Parton, and I cannot stop thinking of these three women together.

Gloria, the maverick who helped change the way women saw themselves and their possibilities. Dolly, who refused to diminish herself for anyone and became beloved precisely by being so completely, unmistakably herself. And Rhoda—less famous to the world, perhaps, but no less singular to those who knew and loved her.

Each of them held a place unto herself.

I think of them now as a beautiful trinity: three extraordinary women leaving this world within days of one another, each having lived by her own light.

I feel terribly sad today. But I also feel loving and, strangely, hopeful. Their deaths remind me not only that a life ends, but that a woman can leave behind something that does not: the force of her character, the people she changed, the stories she gave us, and the unmistakable imprint of having been fully herself.

Godspeed, Rhoda. You were amazing. by @deb_colitti

The Little Red Wagons

Six years ago, when I bought Cottage Cove,
I bought little red wagons too.

Those were the days when I wanted everything just so—
flowers on the table,
cold water waiting,
coffee and tea in the cupboard,
and a little welcome that said,
I’m glad you’re here.

The wagons went to the beach a thousand times.
They hauled chairs and towels and umbrellas,
and sometimes children who absolutely could have walked.
Mine included.

They got scratched and faded,
rusty and tired,
and after six summers I thought,
Well, that’s that. Time for them to go.

Then Danny, my neighbor, spotted them.

“I can fix those.”

And somehow, he did.

The battered old Cottage Cove wagons came back
shiny and red and wonderful—
not new, exactly.
Better than new.

Vintage.

They carry every summer they’ve already had with them.

Danny wouldn’t take a dime for doing it.
And I have a feeling those ridiculous little red wagons
are now so well restored
they may very well outlive me.

I hope they do.

I hope years from now somebody pulls one down to the beach,
fills it with towels and children and too much stuff,
and has no idea how old it is.

That seems just right.

weathered, loved, restored—and still rolling. by @deb_colitti
