Closing - INNER ROOMS

This exhibition emerged through a process of deep reflection and challenge, shaped by the weight of both its theme and the space itself.

Reinterpreting tradition through a contemporary lens ultimately became a journey of looking inward. Throughout the making of INNER ROOMS, the word that stayed with me the longest was resonance. I hope this exhibition offered a quiet place to pause, where a gentle resonance could unfold and linger.

My sincere gratitude goes to the Director of the Shinsegae Art & Space Team for believing in and entrusting me with an idea I had carried within me for a long time. I am equally grateful to the curator and every member of the team for their thoughtful support, collaboration, and dedication in bringing that vision to life.

I would also like to thank everyone who engaged with this exhibition and resonated with it in their own way over the past two months. I will carry those lingering echoes with me as I begin weaving new work. by @debaroun.d

Manifestation

[ INNER ROOMS ]

The House of Shinsegae Heritage is a historic landmark, a renovation of the former First Bank of Korea headquarters. Out of respect for the long-standing history of this space, and with the hope that the past and present may breathe together, I present this ramie installation as my first endeavor into spatial art.

My journey for this exhibition began with the meticulous scouring of ramie and reached its completion through this installation. The subtle light permeating through the grain of the ramie within [ INNER ROOMS ] is also a small manifestation of my inner self, which has quietly grown and flourished throughout the preparation of this exhibition.

The layers behind

This exhibition, in which I personally directed both the creation and curation, takes its departure from the traditional Korean painting ‘Chaekgado’ (Scholar’s Accoutrements). While Chaekgado served as a visual archive reflecting the tastes and worldviews of literati, I have reinterpreted it as a three-dimensional space using natural materials such as vegetable leather and ramie.

I drew particular inspiration from an ‘8-panel Chaekgado screen,’ which features a Bulbalgi-chang—a traditional window designed to bridge the interior and exterior. In my ‘Inner Rooms,’ I similarly integrated a Bulbalgi-chang crafted from leather to express a fluid connection between spaces.

The exhibition is structured around two primary series. The ‘Daeun Daban’ series is characterized by flexible curves following a decagonal (10-sided) structure. I chose a 10-sided frame over the traditional octagonal one to embody the sense of completeness associated with the number 10 and to ensure a softer, more harmonious form from any vantage point. The other pillar, the ‘Harmony’ series of woven leather boxes, intensively reveals the accumulation of time through its dense and intricate structure.

The singular craft language piercing through this entire body of work is the ‘Bakdawi technique,’ a method of creating surfaces by horizontally interlacing twisted double-strand cords.

From sketching and erasing numerous times on an empty stage to the final completion, this entire journey has been a profound record of learning and growth for me.

INNER ROOMS

Hours of breathless dedication have settled here, layer by layer, within this room. Inside the serene halls of the House of Shinsegae Heritage Museum, where echoes of the 1930s still linger, I have created an ‘Inner Room’ — a space where materiality and architecture resonate as one. Through weaving traditional textures with contemporary sensibilities, I hope the resonance of this light, and the time held within it, may gently reach your heart.
