Tēnā koutou o Te Tai Hauāuru. Whaea Debs campaign team here.

We are coming through to share that Debbie’s Mum is currently very unwell and this will be changing what her campaign looks like moving forward.

Most who know Debbie or her whānau know that her Mum is their rock. Not much would halt her in her mission to get this Govt out and to serve you all, but this.

For that reason we will be withdrawing her from upcoming debates and the campaign plan will look very different. This is to allow her and her whānau the time needed to go through the journey that they have ahead.

We understand the urgency of what is expected of Debbie at this time and as her campaign team we are committed to carrying on the work on the ground for Te Tai Hauāuru as we know she would want. We will keep you informed on what that looks like.

For now, we send all of our love to our beautiful Nanny Colleen Ngarewa, Koko Hemi and all of your whānau. And we also reiterate both Debbie’s & our teams love for Te Tai Hauāuru and our people 🖤🤍❤️ by @debbiengarewapacker

Te Pāti Māori announces Toi Māori authority and artist income programme

Te Pāti Māori will establish an independent Toi Māori authority and a continuing, two-year rotational income programme for Māori artists contributing to mātauranga Māori.

The authority will be independent of Creative New Zealand, resourced at parity with it, and governed by tohunga toi from across Māori art forms and iwi.

The income programme will support 1,000 artists at a time, providing paid work for 30 hours a week over two years. Places will then rotate to a new cohort of artists.
Co-Leader Rawiri Waititi said colonisation targeted Māori tohunga, artists and storytellers because they carried the knowledge and identity of their people.

“Our identity is inseparable from our art forms. Successive governments have allowed the harm to Toi Māori to continue. This is about putting decisions in Māori hands and properly backing the artists who carry our mātauranga forward.

“When our creativity is strong, our people are strong.

This investment strengthens & protects the transmission of mātauranga Māori here at home and internationally, it supports the oranga and livelihoods of our artists, and ensures all mokopuna of Aotearoa grow up surrounded by mātauranga Māori in all if its forms. taken in Ōtautahi by @debbiengarewapacker

Yesterday @rawiri_waititi & @hana_rawhiti announced our commitment to back kōhanga reo and kura with long-term investment. Te Pāti Māori will back the future of Māori-medium education with long-term investment in kōhanga reo and kura Māori, giving whānau certainty to build, grow and strengthen te reo Māori for future generations, Co-leader Rawiri Waititi and Hauraki-Waikato MP Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke announced yesterday in Rotorua.

“Kōhanga reo and kura Māori are the heartbeat of te reo Māori revitalisation. They need secure, long-term investment that reflects what they mean to our tamariki, our whānau and the future of Aotearoa.

“This is tino rangatiratanga in education. Māori-medium education must be able to plan, build and grow with certainty,” said Rawiri Waititi.

“From new kōhanga reo to upgraded kura, this is about giving whānau the support and certainty they need to raise tamariki in te reo Māori.

“Our tamariki deserve to learn in environments that are fit for purpose, with the buildings, kaiako and resources needed to support them to thrive,” said Hana-Rāwhiti Maipi-Clarke.

Te Pāti Māori will establish a Te Kōhanga Reo Act and lock in secure annual baseline funding for kōhanga reo.

It will invest $20 million a year in a dedicated capital fund, alongside a $50 million investment to address the backlog of around 80 kōhanga reo needing new builds or refurbishment.

The policy will fund 20 new kōhanga reo over three years, with priorities set alongside Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust to ensure investment reaches the communities that need it most.

For kura Māori, Te Pāti Māori will commit $1.25 billion over five years through a ring-fenced property investment plan.

This includes $250 million a year to upgrade kura property and support the continued growth of Māori-medium education.

Te Pāti Māori will also restore Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori, with $30 million a year to strengthen te reo Māori capability across the education workforce. by @debbiengarewapacker
