via @nicoletung “Everything happened like a blur, ten years ago August 19, 2014, a reporter from CNN called me. ‘I’m so sorry to ask: have you seen the video of James yet?’ I hadn’t. They hung up promptly.

Opening my laptop, I searched for the news online, and there he was in an orange jumpsuit, head shaven, kneeling. He read out a prepared statement in a robotic voice, strain and fear in his face. But his head was held high. His execution was filmed for the world to see in all its brutality.

Since his death on August 19, 2014, so many have worked to remind us all of who he was. They have raised many a glass to the man who touched so many of our lives. They’ve done hard work to keep his legacy alive. So many have done so much to carry his name forward, especially in the James Foley Foundation @jamesfoleyfoundation spearheaded by the most gracious @dmfarnp

Jim was a man of morals, of compassion, bro-dudeness, a man with an affable personality and warmth that was hard to come by among the hardened journalists cut by covering conflict. I relied on him in ways I didn’t even realize, I learned a lot from him in ways I still try and emulate.

For two years we never stopped searching, for ten we’ve never failed to remember. Here is to you forever road buddy, your intelligence, empathy, and humor are so missed.”

Walk about, Graz

Graz is the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Styria. At its heart is Hauptplatz, the medieval old town’s main square. Shops and restaurants line the narrow surrounding streets, which blend Renaissance and baroque architecture.

Lake Garda is Italy’s largest lake and famous for its dramatic, fjord-like alpine north, mild Mediterranean microclimate, and historic walled towns. It offers a diverse mix of world-class water sports, ancient medieval castles. Lake Garda has a stunning microclimate: Protected by surrounding mountains, the lake’s basin enjoys a mild, almost subtropical climate allowing olive groves, vineyards, and lemon terraces to flourish just a stone’s throw away from the snow-capped Alpine peaks.

This day I went to Riva del Garda, at the furthest point north on Lake Garda to Trentino-Alto Adige. The lake spans three Italian regions (Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige). The three hour sail took us past Garda’s most beautiful towns.

Lake Garda, in northern Italy, is known for its crystal clear water, charming medieval towns with cobblestone streets and towns on the north of the lake majestic mountains and stunning peaks.

Sirmione is known as the “pearl of the lake,” famous for its medieval Scaligero Castle and Roman ruins (Grotte di Catullo).

“The exhibition: A Closer Look, held at the Santa Giulia Museum is the first major monographic exhibition ever presented in Italy dedicated to Bruce Gilden (New York, 1946), a member of the Magnum Photos agency and known as one of the pioneers of Street Photography, to whom Brescia is dedicating a single, important composite project for the first time in Italy.

The exhibition revolves around Faces (2013-2024), portraits of people characterized by a dynamic accent, particular graphic qualities and the original and direct way in which Gilden photographs faces with the aid of flash; these shots are created as a figurative chronicle of cities around the world.

These works that are born from a relationship and a strongly sought dialogue with the subjects, but which do not renounce his direct and uncompromising approach, typical of his expressive style.”
