I attended a cheese tasting in Austin a couple of days ago (Antontelli’s in Austin, highly recommend!) we were asked what our “soul cheese” would be. Without thinking what would be your perfect cheese. Rethinking my answer now—can I say cheesecake? Would that count? The Basque cheesecake with raspberry coulis, vanilla olive oil and fresh berries at Bouboulina (photographed for Bethesda Magazine) is a creamy bite and kind of patriotic in time for July 4th 🇺🇸

Starting 2025 with one of my final shoots of 2024 - Osteria Mozza for Tom Sietsema’s dining review in the Post and it was really a pinch me moment. Getting Nancy Silverton and Stephen Starr together for portraits was a logistical challenge but I was thrilled when it all came together. I knew I needed to do a standard portrait of them but really wanted to see their interaction. Lucky me, they had a tasting scheduled for upcoming lunch menu items so I got my wish and one of my fav pics from the day. The respect they have for each other is obvious and getting a peek at the behind the scenes process was fascinating. When they asked me to weigh in on sandwiches 🤯

A little something different for me - I recently joined with Found to showcase and rep my work! It’s a way to expand my possibilities for work in Austin, TX while still keeping nice and busy in the DMV. I’m not moving, just spending at least a few days a month in Texas so if you know someone in the Austin area who needs some photos, spread the word 🗣️

My favorite fundraiser of the year – and Washington’s premier food event – is always Chefs for Equality. I’ve been photographing it since 2019 when I first offered my services to my friend David Hagedorn, who created the event with the Human Rights Campaign in 2012.
This was my first time experiencing the new format where individual restaurants offered multi-course, chef-driven, spirited collab dinners and cocktail sessions. I spent the evening at Moon Rabbit. Holy cow, what a lineup!

CHEFS: Kevin Tien and Susan Bae of Moon Rabbit, Jeremiah Langhorne of The Dabney, Harley Peet of Bas Rouge, Martel Stone of Dogon, Lekki Limtavana of Six Ways to Sunday, Rachael Jennings of Boogy + Peel
SOMMS + MIXOLOGISTS: Nadine Brown, Summer Whitford, Alyssa Wolf,
Josh White of Death & Co, Ashtyn Harris of Press Club, Thi Nyguen of Moon Rabbit
CHEESEMONGER: Kara McGrath, Paste & Rind
WEDDING CAKE: Rosie Nguyen, Rose Ave Bakery
FLORALS + TABLE DECOR: CFE Committee member Christopher Vazquez, Amaryllis Event Design House

What HRC leads Matt Eppright, Mollie Levin, Nat Sepulveda, and the CFE Committee accomplished – coordinating vendors and purveyors, all the chefs, mixologists, sommeliers, and cheesemongers, plus goody bags for each guest, an online auction, and more – was truly astounding and delicious, raising more than $120K for the Human Rights Campaign.

Another Post Dining Guide shoot - and my first visit to Yellow in Georgetown (I’d been to the one in Navy Yard next to Albi) and was so entranced by the colors and textures of the food. The smoked amba chicken was the star of the photo shoot but I could not stop eating the Shatta Batata (spicy hash brown tots) in the upper left. I could have made a meal on those alone😋

I didn’t photograph much in the way of traditional fine dining for this fall’s Post Dining Guide, which was kind of by design. I am increasingly drawn to more casual places and really good neighborhood joints. Lutece is an exception. Such creative food is being done there and I love to visit even though it’s one of the tighter spaces I’ve shoot in. I’ve never been in the kitchen, not sure where I’d fit! 📸 of their gorgeous Squab Pithivier—squab breast wrapped in cabbage then in duck farce, then cabbage again before eging set inside puff pastry served with a reduced poultry jus and appple gastrique and a puree of black walnut miso.

More dining guide 📸 work: It’s hard to pick a favorite pizza place in town but 2Amy’s is definitely near the top of the list. I usually go for an Etna 2.0 but since I was already photographing the Norcia (tomato, salami, grilled peppers, fresh mozz and grana), the polite thing to do was eat that. Of course it was delicious and I love to hang out at the back bar and watch the dining scene unfold (so many families)!

If it’s mid-October it must be Washington Post dining guide time! I got a chance to photograph a few places on the list and it was so nice to return to some of my very favorite spots in town.
Starting with 2Fifty BBQ. I don’t eat tons of BBQ in DC since we spend so much time in Austin but when I do—it’s 2Fifty. Fernando (seen here checking on briskets) and Debby are the best and it’s the closest thing my BBQ snob husband has found to real TX BBQ in DC. And Fernando always lays out the most beautiful array of meats and unique sides for me to shoot. I’ve been shooting their place since they opened and I always jump at the chance to go back 😍

Manifest Bread pt. 2
The food, the owners, and the atmosphere! I can’t wait to go back 😃

Kudos to Manifest Bread for a well deserved rave review in the Washington Post⭐️⭐️ It was a pleasure photographing there (2X) and seeing the place in action during the day and then for dinner. The place is abuzz with plenty of regulars (the sign of a great neighborhood joint), lots of to-go orders heading out the door and a bakery case that stays stocked well into the evening, making Manifest a solid hit. I was obsessed with the bread texture and maybe spent a little more time photographing the baguette and sourdough loaves than was strictly necessary. I totally inhaled the bread and burrata (last photo) although couldn’t decide if it was better with the sweet butter or just by itself🥖
More pics coming soon of the rest of the food and owners Rick and Tyes Cook 😃

Two of the fabulous fall appetizers on the menu at Well Dunn Catering. It’s always a treat for me to see what’s cooking for the upcoming season and I adore how creative they are with the plating and vessels. That white server with mini vases 😍😍

Pictured: Togarashi Tuna Lollipop (seared tuna bites / togarashi spice / soy yuzu glaze / wasabi aioli) and Mushroom Shawarm (with garlic toum sauce / sumac onions / pickled turnip / pita crisp)

Every morning starts for me with a big mug of.....tea. Yeah, I’ve never been a coffee fan. Yet I photograph coffee regularly and am usually pretty happy with the results. If I ever decided to explore the coffee universe I would definitely consult Tim Carman who’s attention to detail on all things coffee is pretty remarkable. Recent photos for his story on avoiding coffee mistakes at home. Styled by Lisa Cherkasky 🤎
