In remembrance of my Grandfather, George McCorkindale 9/175 Otago Mounted, NZ First Exp. Forces in Egyptian 1914-15-16, Egyptian E. F. 1916, Balkan 1915 (Gallipoli), Western European 1916-17-18 Theatres of Operation. If not for his bravery, persistence and resilience I wouldn’t be here today to reflect and be grateful. Thank you for your service. 🙏

It’S ANZAC DAY in Australia and New Zealand. As a Kiwi-Aussie I pay my respects with both symbols of significance in respect and remembrance.

In NZ the poppy is a reference to the red or Flanders poppy linked with battlefield deaths since the Great War (1914–18). It was one of the first plants to grow and bloom on battlefields in the Belgian region of Flanders. The connection was made most famously by a Canadian medical officer, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, in his poem, ‘In Flanders fields’.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow  Between the crosses row on row,  That mark our place; and in the sky  The larks, still bravely singing, fly  Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago  We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,  Loved and were loved, and now we lie  In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:  To you from failing hands we throw  The torch; be yours to hold it high.  If ye break faith with us who die  We shall not sleep, though poppies grow  In Flanders fields.

In Australia, The Ode of Remembrance
comes from the fourth stanza of the poem For the Fallen, a poem by English poet and writer Laurence Binyon. The poem was first published in The Times on 21 September 1914. It was later published in the Winnowing Fan - Poems of the Great War.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun and in the morning  We will remember them.

Inspired by mid century design as a child of the 60s. I wanted to use my “Ode to DMQ”for this faux wall tile. I love geometric patterns and colour and had so much fun coming up with more than 10 arrangements of the tiles before settling on this denser layout.

Tile Lines mimics the structure of tiled surfaces with a soft geometric touch. A subtle pattern that’s great for modern minimal interiors, backsplash-inspired wallpaper, or coordinated quilting. Blends easily with bold hero prints or other textures. Available in multiple colours. Coming to my Spoonflower store soon.
