Before Baywatch.
Nearly 50 years after I first reported for duty as a young lifeguard along the San Clemente coastline, I returned to where it all began for the San Onofre Parks Foundation’s Summer Speaker Series.
Thank you to the San Clemente Times for this wonderful cover story about Guarded: Women, Water, and Saving Lives and the women who helped change California ocean lifeguarding.

This remarkable story about Title IX in Hawaii hit close to home. So many of the details echo the history I uncovered while writing GUARDED—right down to the most basic questions: Where do the women change? Where do they go to the bathroom? Who was the space designed for?
One line especially stayed with me: “It’s for the girls behind us.”
Important history, beautifully written.

Had the best time today at Ocean City’s “Show Us Your Shoes” Parade, celebrating 250 years of America! 🇺🇸✨

My shoes were inspired by Debbie Friedman, one of the first female lifeguards and a true pioneer for women in lifeguarding. I loved getting to honor her strength, courage, and trailblazing spirit while celebrating the history, community, and joy that make Ocean City so special.

There is nothing like parade day: the boardwalk, the music, the smiles, the sparkles, and all the incredible women stepping out with stories on their shoes. So grateful to be part of this unforgettable tradition! ❤️🤍💙
