I’ve just had the loveliest few days launching IL Projett Ta’Qalb Tajab (The Kindness Project) in Malta. Brilliant publishers and awesome humans, Chris Gruppetta and Rachel Portelli from Merlin Publishers, signed the novel up loving its message of kindness, tolerance and creating projects that make the world a better place. We even made it onto the Maltese news! But of course, the most fun is always talking to kids about reading and stories and how kindness is a superpower.

Thank you to Pierre for his design work which is always so clever and beautiful, and to award-winning authors @leanneellul and @clareazzopardi for their brilliant translation. Leanne did the most entertaining readings of the book, which the kids loved!

I’m so proud to be published by Merlin. I first saw Malta as a kid on our lounge room wall in shaky super 8 footage filmed by my dad, who was born there and I made a promise to myself, I’d travel there one day. We first stayed in 2005, in a traditional farmhouse on the island of Gozo. I launched the Max Remy novels and met gorgeous publishers and now firm and adored friends, Chris and Rachel from Merlin Publishers. So far they’ve translated four of my novels, with incredible authors and translators, @leanneellul and @clareazzopardi

This time we wandered streets we knew and others that were new to us. And while standing in front of an old dance hall, wondering about it’s history, an older man with his grandkids told us it was Malta’s first night club and restaurant and he played the saxophone there for years. It was a lovely moment where history appeared right before our eyes. #malta #travel #travelling #deborahabela #author by @deborah_abela_

We’ve been in beautiful Pulia with friends, enjoying the coast, the beaches and the delicious food, disappearing into sunny days, catching up and wandering through winding streets and other peoples lives. Beautiful few days in Pulia, Italy, with gorgeous friends, Jack and Barb. Hiking along sparkling blue coastlines, eating local seafood and enjoying traipsing through nature. Jack and I met in 1990 on a truck travelling through Africa, where we were caught in a sandstorm in the Sahara Desert, harassed by monkeys and woke up next to an alligator on the Zaire River. After leaving Albania, we took the overnight ferry to Bari, in Italy, where we made it way up to the charming seaside town of Trani for a few days of strolling, home-cooking and lying around reading. Perfect. #italy #travel #deborahabela #author #travelling by @deborah_abela_

Our last days in Albania. We’ve loved it! The food, the ferries, the misty mountain climbs into the clouds and the people. The recent history of the country is really sobering and we learned so much we never knew about life under a brutal and paranoid communist regime from 1945-1991. The museums we visited and guides we met told us stories to be remembered so those times will never be repeated. #albania #travelling #deborahabela #adventures by @deborah_abela_

We made it! Phew! We climbed from Valbone to Theth, crossing through the Valbone Pass at an elevation of 1795m! We were so hoping for spectacular chasms falling away as we climbed rugged craggy peaks…but we had to resort to our imaginations as thick cloud rolled in and we often hiked on skinny mountain paths blanketed in rolling mist. But it was spectacular! We stopped halfway at a wooden hut serving coffee and mountain tea…I’m still not sure exactly what it was but on a cold, windy climb, was the best drink I’ve ever tasted! #travel #deborahabela #valbone #albania #accursedmountains by @deborah_abela_

Our hike up the mountain from Valbone to Theth. The weather the day of our hike closed in, so we were mostly walking in a cloud, with narrow cliff edge paths falling away into misty nothingness. I tried to focus on each step rather than the chasm of a fall that might be hidden in that mist. Half way up, we came to a small wooden house, with a few benches and a bearish man selling coffee and mountain tea. I’ve had a few mountain teas in Albania, each one tasting different, each one’s ingredients a mystery. #travel #Albania #deborahabela #valbone #theth by @deborah_abela_
