Josie and the Pussycats was released 25 years ago today — and flopped spectacularly. Roger Ebert gave it half a star. Critics called it hypocritical for satirizing product placement while being full of product placement (the entire point). “We came up on grunge and individuality,” said co-director Deb Kaplan. “And all of a sudden it was disappearing. We were being force-fed something shiny and sanitized. Josie was a reaction to that.” Completely misunderstood in 2001, the campy satire is now a certified cult classic and is looking more and more like a documentary every day.
