Appreciating forgotten places and the stories they might tell.
These walls can’t talk, so I’m making it up.

The audacity of this house to look this good while actively falling apart.

A beautifully weathered abandoned farmhouse in Eastern Washington, surrounded by rolling hills and sagebrush.

I know, I know. It’s not my usual abandoned farmhouse. But my bio says I appreciate forgotten places. This 104-year-old, abandoned bridge would like to be appreciated too.

You’d call this one ma’am.

You can’t explain it. You just know.

And you’d better mind your manners.

I usually chase the dramatic skies, but Eastern Washington had other plans. The wild fire smoke softened everything, so I learned into it and gave these a light, airy, retro treatment. Sometimes the conditions make the photo you didn’t expect.

Same house, four angles, four personalities.

Front: wholesome pioneer.
Side: haunted, but nice.
Other side: reclusive grandmother.
Back: knows exactly where the bodies are buried.

Fort Casey is not my usual kind of place. There are no collapsing barns, leaning houses, or weeds aggressively reclaiming a doorway.

It is, however, a giant concrete fort with dark tunnels, enormous gun batteries, tiny windows, and at least one bird who has apparently decided that an interior window sill deep underground is a perfectly reasonable place to spend the afternoon.

Not my usual rural abandoned farmhouse, but still very much my kind of beautiful.

I finally made it.

Have been wanting to visit the Northern State Hospital ever since the grounds were opened to the public several years ago.

I walked six miles.

I still missed some of the buildings.

Already planning the return trip.

Northern State Hospital operated from 1912 to 1973, and the former psychiatric hospital campus is enormous. Historic buildings are scattered throughout the grounds, connected by roads and trails that make the whole place feel less like a single location and more like an abandoned little town.

This looks like somewhere your grandpa would’ve pointed at and said,

“That used to belong to ol’ Earl”

Who is Earl?

No one knows.
