Or you came keep cutting Junk stringers.

We turned our square into a drilling template. Every Simpson TA9Z lands in the same spot, the screws center on the preset holes, and every tread comes out dead-level. It's one of the systems that make CleanStairs repeatable on any job.

If you run a deck company, you know who ends up building the stairs.

With cut stringers, the stairs go to whoever can do the math and make perfect cuts. That's almost always your lead carpenter. While they're working through the stairs, the rest of the deck is waiting on them.

CleanStairs takes the stair out of the "only one person can do it" category. It's a repeatable layout process:

• Set up the square
• Place the TA9Z brackets on continuous wrapped stringers
• Build the tread assemblies
• Drop the treads in between the stringers

A solid crew member can follow that process and get the same result: clean wrapped stringers, no exposed tread ends, and no mitered stair corners. That frees your lead to keep the deck moving.

The photos walk through it: the square set and a bracket placed, both stringers laid out, a tread assembly ready to go, treads dropped in, and a finished stair.

Hand-cut stringers are the new knob-and-tube wiring. 🪚
PVC deck stairs without notched stringers | stair system for deck builders

They worked back then. Nobody's putting them in new work now.

Every notch you cut takes out structure and opens end grain right where the water sits. We kept tearing out decks whose stairs had already been replaced once, because the stairs gave out long before the decks did.

So we quit cutting stringers.

CleanStairs uses continuous wrapped stringers with no notches. The treads are 4x10 beam assemblies on TA9Z brackets, the stringer tops are taped to seal the skins, and the beams are sealed with FastenMaster Deck Frame Coating. You get a capped stringer with no exposed tread ends.

Send this to the guy on your crew who's still hand-cutting stringers.

And I already know half the comments are gonna be about that fucking beam. 😂

But look closer.

This project is a perfect example of why deck building in the Puget Sound gets complicated FAST.

Multiple elevations.
Waterproofing.
PVC decking.
New framing.
Multiple stair systems.
And details stacked on top of details.

There's a lot happening here — but I guarantee most of you are still staring at that beam. 😂

Starting to think the glacier that carved out Puget Sound might've been a deck builder. 😂

Dude left us hills, cliffs, waterfront, 30-foot elevation changes and about 47 different levels to connect together.

Then said, "Figure the fucking stairs out."

Challenge accepted.

Thousands of years later, we're still following his layout.

Except now we've got CleanStairs.

Back to the 5/8s. 😂

The four 10s have been good to us, but with the days getting shorter, it's time to make the seasonal switch.

For the rest of the year we're moving back to five 8-hour days.

Now the upper deck is a different animal.

We're removing ALL the existing plywood.

Then:

New plywood.
Proper prep and detailing.
And a new Rhino Linings waterproof coating system over the top.

When you've got space underneath a deck that needs to stay dry, you're not just thinking about the walking surface anymore.

You're building a waterproof system.

Water management matters.
