Not A Phase is special. Very special. I don’t know of any other charity that works so outright hard to bring joy into the lives of trans+ people. I find the passion, creativity and love which drives this pursuit something truly astonishing to witness. It is often moving, exciting and always joyful and I was lucky to see it in action again today.

I felt privileged to be part of Not A Phase’s Pride in London celebrations and protest. Bringing together allies and trans+ people who make a difference with their support for Not A Phase and their powerful representation on behalf of the community, to use our voices (and an amazing blimp, which we need to name) to shout about what the charity does and why it is needed.

Of course we are in deeply challenging times, to put it mildly, and the need for safe spaces for the community to build connection, resilience and experience joy are more important than ever, as well as a critical part of helping resist the oppression trans+ people are facing. We want to ensure we are able to keep supporting the community into the future and so today launched our five year strategy, Joy As An Act of Resistance, making a commitment to do just that through our five year priorities.

It’s a proud moment for a special charity and a proud moment for anyone who wants to be part of uplifting the lives of trans+ people. Please get involved and support us on this exciting journey. Everybody’s welcome! by @dee.humphreys

My favourite book this year has been Love in Exile by Shon Faye. I reread it this week and it sent a wave of wonder over me again. This chapter especially, on motherhood in all its assorted forms, has been a constant point of reflection as a trans woman navigating what my unexpected motherhood, within my family and my community can mean. The examination of religion, particularly Catholicism in how it has shaped and shifted understandings of love was something I needed as a fellow Catholic school survivor, with an ongoing ecclesiastical fascination. It’s such a stunningly written and deftly weaved study of love and I honestly can’t get enough of it. Left me so hopeful and forever changed. by @dee.humphreys

Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday. It’s been nearly three years since she died.

I have been lucky to spend the last few days away, creating and reflecting. The grief has crept in over the hours spent walking, watching and writing. My life has changed so much for the better since she died. The grief spurred me on to channel my love and care to places where it is valued and to amplify joy as far and wide as possible. Mum knew how to light up life, how to always push for better for everyone, how to bring happiness to those around her and really to go at a million miles an hour in the push for social justice and having a fucking great time. She would never tolerate wallowing, so here I am, trying to embody the best of her or connecting with more of those who do and feeling the happiest I have ever felt.

Sometimes the cost of that happiness has been heavy. And occasionally, when I think about all the beautiful things I have in my life, it breaks my heart all over again. But I can live with that, it’s worth it for all the wonderful people and silly experiences that have made up my world since she’s been gone. I’ll tell her all about it one day, because she fucking loves a good story. taken in Margate, Kent by @dee.humphreys
