Well. Life has been hard, and sad, and beautiful, and sad again, and brave, and abundant and a lot more these past couple weeks. I would say most of the people closest to me know what’s been happening, so I find it strange to post about it on social media, but there are many more who know and love me and my family who would have wanted to be able to send some comfort, and this feels like the easiest way to let them all know…

My mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the end of June, so only about four and half months ago. Her treatment was going really well and she had surgery on October 24th to remove the tumor that had shrunk with chemo. It was initially called a success! We had no reason to think she wouldn’t be coming home last week. There ended up being some complications with sepsis that we thought had been resolved with a second surgery earlier in the week. Sunday morning (November 2) she was feeling really great, but things went south so quickly that day and it was a shock to hear the doctor say she probably only had hours left to live that afternoon.

There’s a lot more to the story including our begging her to fight and endure just one more surgery, to try one more time! She didn’t want to, but agreed to one more surgery, “one more time.” Unfortunately, the doctor said it was too late. It wouldn’t make a difference either way. We stayed by her side for the next 18 hours before finally going home at 7:00 am Monday morning. The words to this Death Cab song kept coming to my head, “love is watching someone die.” To want to be with that person you love so dearly until the very last minute.

That evening, my dad experienced a medical emergency in which 911 had to be called. He was nonresponsive and the paramedics told us he was showing signs of sepsis, the very thing my mom was dying from at that moment. For a little while there we thought the reason she didn’t end up passing on Sunday was because she was waiting for them to go together the next day…. (Cont in comments) by @deeannghansen

Three beautiful kids off to three different schools. Before you ask how June is already in junior high, she’s not. I have a high schooler and two different elementary school kids at two different elementary schools. 🤦🏼‍♀️ You can ask me why, but the full answer lacks a lot of common sense and I just have to be grateful that after moving last month (post coming eventually, probably), and a nightmare of a fight, I managed to keep one child at her elementary school for one more year. It’s sad and frustrating, but scroll to pictures 4-6 to see why this kid had no problem making friends on the first day. This was 24 of the best hours of my life with this teenage kid of mine. His very favorite @weareneoni went on their first headlining tour, but didn’t make a stop in Utah. So, we jumped on a flight to Denver for the night (because May is the craziest month ever and we had commitments the day before and the day after). Dex and I both said that day was so fun and so unforgettable. A memory we’ll both keep as a prize forever.

A couple weeks ago a friend who I have adored and looked up to for years said something that caught me off gaurd and really dug it’s way into me. We were talking at the gym and it came up that my teenage son is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Something I love him for, not inspite of. She basically congratulated me on how well I’m “dealing with that,” and she was “glad it wasn’t a trial of faith,” she’s been dealt. Please, watch this video and tell me if you think he is a trial I’m having to endure. Truthfully, having a bi-sexual son has clarified my faith, but no part of it is a trial. Look at us. Do you have this much fun with your teenagers? I would bet most moms don’t have the type of relationship with their teen boys as I have with Dexter and I’m sorry for their loss. Honestly, isn’t the gay guy always your favorite character in every movie?? A trend I’ll happily participate in every year! Duncan looks mostly the same to me, although he discovered he likes his hair longer. He cried off and on all day yesterday. “I’ll never be in 1st Grade agaaaaaaain.” 😭

June has just grown into such a gorgeous girl, inside (mostly😉 #sassy) and out. Love them so much. These elementary years really are flying by so fast.

#brainrot with our kids. I still don’t totally get what that means, but I guess I’m “too old” to get it. Absolutely no one will think this is as funny as we did, but I was crying laughing!!

Seriously though, I am loving this stage of parenthood with Jer. We still think (know) we’re super cool, but we have reached that age where we think all the things these kids say, wear, and listen to are crazy and we don’t get any of it. And I friggin love it!! I love that we have to ask our kids what slang words mean and I am in awe of the fact that they know every word to every new song that I’ve never even heard. It’s so fun! And doing it with Jer is so, so fun! #weold 🤷🏼‍♀️ #stillhot by @deeannghansen

POV: You’re an over prepared, new mother learning the truth about the St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun for the first time.

Yes, it’s not normally my thing. Ya, I probably should be embarrassed to post it. The audio and lighting, horrendous… But my family are all big fans of @jkstudios and their sketches, and ya’ll know how big a fan I am of St. Patrick’s Day. So, Dex and I have been joking about doing this for three years and I finally told him last night it was time. If you get a giggle, great. If you’re embarrassed for me, who cares. We laughed our heads off for an hour doing something he enjoys and my teen thinks his mom is funny, so take that St. Patrick’s Day! My Sweet Falcettes (my girls),

I love you. I love you. I love you. Like many of you, I’ve spent a lot of time in tears over the past 24 hours. Losing Mandi has really shaken me and I know so many of you were close to her. Even if you haven’t spoken to her in years, feeling shattered by this unexpected loss hitting so close to home is devastating, and that makes sense. We spent so much time together, lifting each other up, and pushing through thick challenges for the same goals and that bond sits with you as you grow.

Ricci and I still talk about you all, all the time and laugh at things you said. I tell her all the time, “don’t question me!” In Kendra’s voice. Last night we cried as we talked about how highly we always thought of Mandi. I know I speak for her too when I say I could go on and on about how much she has impressed me over the years, but what I really feel overwhelmed to tell you all is how much you mean to me. To both of us.

Being a part of your lives in the way that I was is something sacred. I loved you all so much back then and I don’t know if I made sure you knew. I still love you now. Watching you each grow into these incredible, beautiful, impressive women is seriously such a joyful part of my life. Your careers, your adventures, your families, your babies, your scares, your lives are something I love seeing in this space. I hurt for you back then when things felt heavy and I hurt for you now.

Ricci and I were the age you are now when we coached you. We were strict, we (I mostly) were intense, we were so invested in you and being your coach was one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever had, but it was also one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. Every time you stepped out on that floor it was worth it. It continues to be so fulfilling to me as I take pride in the women you’ve become. Pride that I got to play a small part in who you are. Please know that. Please know I’m so proud of you. I love you.

Just wanted a permanent spot on the grid for Valentines Day 2025.

“Oh what a beautiful feeling to love and know love in return.” @dermotkennedy What an incredible thing to love so deeply your life and the people in it.

Jer won Valentine’s Day with his gift. A massive wooden sign he had made with a beautiful quote from one of my favorite obsessions, @amnthewilderness “You’re still everything I wanted. We were built to last.” These years have taught us that and truthfully, I couldn’t stop loving him if I tried. Good thing he loves me so well.

June and Duncan with their boxes. And a very special delivery for a very special girl.

Dex was there too and I wish I’d gotten a picture of him as he walked out the door with a handful of wrapped roses and a sharp looking blazer.

We finished with our tradition of heart shaped pizza and fondue. I agree, Valentine’s is a little bit of silly holiday, but we loved it. by @deeannghansen
