I was a young college graduate of Howard University. It was September 10, 2001. I was desperately looking for a job- any paying job. I applied to law firms and financial organizations to get my foot in the door anyway I knew how. I scheduled multiple interviews weeks in advance. I had an interview September 10 on Vesey Street, completed the interview and was headed back home in NJ when I remembered I had an interview scheduled at a law firm on September 11 at 9 AM in the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Because I was being lazy and didn’t want to come back downtown on the following day, I called the firm and asked if they would see me on September 10 instead of September 11th. The firm gladly obliged. I met with them that day (September 10th) and never heard from them again.

I don’t know why God allowed me to rebook that interview, but I remember the faces of those folk in the north tower as I took the elevator up to the interview. I remember the halls and the building.
I remember the quiet, eerie hum of the streets when I left and headed toward the subway.

I don’t know who made it out, but I remember them all 25 years later.. I remember my dear friend @jjo1908 who also worked in one of the buildings. I remember trying to call her so many times and I finally got her. She was walking home to Brooklyn, exhausted, overwhelmed, but she was alive. I remember my other friends trying to reach me and thank God, I was watching the tragedy from my parents basement in tears. I remember my family from all over the country calling my mom to see if I was OK because they knew I had a big fancy internship in New York City post graduation.

I remember. Today, I weep for for every single family who suffered loss as a result of this tragedy. I remember- and my heart still breaks. 💔🙏🏾 by @deedeefaison

Nashville, you were GOOD to me. 🤎✨

The 2026 National Urban League Conference was one of those experiences that leaves you feeling inspired, grateful, and reminded of why the work matters.

I had the opportunity to connect with incredible people, have meaningful conversations, celebrate Black excellence, and be in a room filled with so many people committed to creating change and opening doors for the next generation.

I’m especially grateful to have experienced it representing the Black Information Network and the work we’re doing to amplify Black voices and stories.

Leaving Nashville with a full heart, a grateful spirit, and plenty of new memories. 🫶🏾

Until next time… 🎶✨

A few weeks ago, I had the incredible privilege of previewing the Obama Presidential Center as a partner of The Black Information Network.

The experience was nothing short of inspiring. Walking through this remarkable space, reflecting on history, leadership, service, and the power of possibility, was truly unforgettable.

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to plan a visit with your family and loved ones when it opens. It’s an opportunity to witness history, celebrate progress, and leave inspired to make an impact in your own community.

Reconnecting with the story, vision, and legacy represented there was easily one of the highlights of my trip. I can’t wait for others to experience it as well.

We said farewell to a REAL one today. A SOLID one… The one and only Cory Trotman.

Cory, my mind can’t reconcile the fact that you’re gone but my heart knows that you’ll live on forever. I’m going to miss your sarcasm, jokes, smack talking and overall presence but I know God needed you up there to get things organized.

P.S. Your people showed up for you, just like you would for us. I hope you know how much we love you and how much you’re already missed.

Job well done, fam. 💙🤍🧡 by @deedeefaison
