i can’t totally wrap my head around how grateful i am to be working on a project at this particular moment with someone i love and respect so deeply, so instead i’ll just say that being at the legendary @lamamaetc with @gloriousmistakes ( and the incredible @astroturfnoise ) is a dream come true.

nana and gaga always said that when one of them passed, the other would be right behind them. less than a month after my grandfather died, my grandmother kept that promise.

her name is diana joy meredith campbell but to everyone who knows and loves her, she’s nana. my grandparents were inseparable - so much so that “nana-and-gaga” became their joint name. they went on three dates over one weekend before gaga proposed to nana, and then they were married for 63 years. they had two daughters and six grandchildren and we all absolutely adored them.

on their first date they saw elvis in “blue hawaii” and it remained their favorite movie. on sunday afternoon with all of us surrounding her, we listened to the soundtrack one last time. not ten seconds after the last song finished, she was gone. later, i overheard the hospice nurse say that her cause of death was takotsubo cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as “broken heart syndrome.”

my very first memory is of her. i was helping her do the dishes, standing on a step-stool beside her, drying them as she carefully handed them to me. she noticed i was making a pattern of fork-spoon-knife, fork-spoon-knife next to bowl-plate-cup, bowl-plate-cup. she looked down, smiled, and said “oh deejay, i believe things can be beautiful too.”

it’s my first and favorite memory and it was just so her, which became just so me. all of the qualities in myself that i value, i got from her. if you like me, you would love her.

the look in my little kid eyes in the first picture while i’m looking at her is exactly how i’ve been looking at her and loving her ever since. and the “i love grandma” bib says it all. i really do.

anyone who’s known me for any significant amount of time knows my love for my grandparents, nana and gaga. last tuesday at 4:38 in the morning, we said goodbye to gaga for the last time.

i don’t know where the significance of the number 8 first came from in my family but it always seems to appear on clocks and calendars when we need them… like little reminders that we’re connected through it all, like the universe is paying attention.

to be honest i don’t know much about numerology or how much weight i really put on it all but when i looked at the time after he took his last breath and it ended with an 8, it felt like a final hug from a man who loved us so much and made our lives so much better.

things aren’t going to be the same without him, his sense of humor, or his love for me and my family. this has been an incredible loss but we’re so grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love for us and for a man we’re going to love and miss forever. by @deejay.gray
