In semester 2 last year @__by_aa led our honours class to create a publication which served as a personal lookbook for ourselves as designers. Over the semester we completed several preliminary self-reflective exercises in order to gain a better understanding of our own design practices.

I landed on a final product which was loud and sharp, so sharp that I can say my genuine blood went in to the production of this book. by @deeor_designarchive

Whether you call it post-punk or goth rock, in Part A of my Honour’s research project I am investigating how the foundational bands of the genre in Britain’s use of typography in album art developed a distinct visual identity which laid the groundwork for a lot of contemporary gothic design.

I go back to my roots in the creation of this workbook of the binding technique that started my love of publication design. With a UV printed cover, French fold pages and Japanese stab binding I wanted to create a journalistic artefact which acts akin to a personal diary through these past months of research. by @deeor_designarchive

Looking at the most prominent post-punk album covers in England and Scotland from 1978-1990 I noticed a pattern. They had taken punks outward anger and transformed it into introspection. They wanted control over chaos, and leaned in to a musical atmosphere of gloom and never-ending despair.

In my research I started off copying letters from each of my sourced albums, then using them to recreate album covers using the word as imagery too. For the prototypes I explored 3 different ways of categorising over different levels of research. First was style, then year and finally mood. As I move into Part B over the next few weeks of this project I am not yet sure where it’ll go but I know it will be another publication. by @deeor_designarchive

Following ISTD brief 5: Power, Confessions of a Sensualist is a recontextualision of one of histories most overlooked and belittled love stories — Venus in Furs by Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch (the namesake of Masochism).

My strategic intent was to create an artefact that showcases the nuances of sadomasochistic relationships that are often misrepresented in mass media. The final product is sensually intimate as readers must first untie the book from its red binding. Then upon touching or even smelling the supple goat hide cover, they become the submissive stroking his misstress’ leather boot.

This project was such a blessing to work on and I am grateful to the advice provided by Carolyn Barnes and Andrew Ashton @__by_aa throughout the past two semesters. by @deeor_designarchive

I am completing Communication Design Strategy online over the break to catch up to speed and here are my final outcomes for assignment 1 which was develop three early concepts for Swinburne Mental Health Week in 2026.

The research and planning went much deeper than I can show in a little instagram post so you’ll have to trust me.

This Swinburne Mental Health Week campaign needed to promote awareness around the importance of good mental health. It should promote awareness of Swinburne’s services and support around mental health, as research has shown that this needs to be improved, particularly in the current climate, when many are both working and studying remotely. The campaign needs to engage the audience and encourage participation in the event. by @deeor_designarchive

A selected momento of a coaster from one of melbournes first lesbian bar ‘Girlbar’ informed the creation of this zine.

Ladychain reflects on every aspect of lesbianism, what we wear how we present and who we really are. Through splices of history, poetry and call to action this piece calls for you to remember us in all our glory.

This is a double sided zine with a blank side only showing the colours of the lesbian flag as different textures without type so after reading, it can be used as decoration for walls or door frames. by @deeor_designarchive

4 sub genres of rock music were explored through different experimental image making practices to create a total of 8 album covers and here are my final four chosen concepts.

The techniques used were digital collage, heat mapping of a keyboard, alcohol ink dropping and photography. by @deeor_designarchive
