POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
‘The Last of Earth’ is out in the US today! Thanks to everyone @randomhousebooks @randomhouse for their incredible work, the beautiful cover, and the page design. Thanks to my editor Caitlin McKenna, Naomi Goodheart (whose photos of the book I’ve posted here), Erin Richards, Madison Dettlinger and everyone else who worked on the book. All credit to @magalicazo, who is the cover artist, and Elena Giavaldi @elenagiavaldicovers, who designed the jacket. And thanks to @helencannart for the lovely map.

I’ll be eternally grateful for the years the book allowed me to spend researching Tibet and cartography and Buddhism, and for the opportunity to visit Tibet. In the novel a character mentions Buddhist monks who make beautiful mandalas only to destroy them later, to illustrate the impermanence of life and all things in life, and while I won’t go that far, I’m reminding myself that today is also about letting go of something that existed only for me for a long while, and its fate. (No guarantees I’ll be successful in practising this principle of detachment, but I can try!)

The Last of Earth by Deepa Anappara

An Epic Historical Adventure Set in Colonial India and Tibet | Espionage, Exploration, Empire, and a Forbidden Journey to Lhasa

1869. Tibet is closed to Europeans, an infuriating obstruction for the rapidly expanding British Empire. In response, Britain begins training Indians—permitted to cross borders that white men may not—to undertake illicit, dangerous surveying expeditions into Tibet.

Balram is one such surveyor-spy, an Indian schoolteacher who, for several years, has worked for the British, often alongside his dearest friend, Gyan. But Gyan went missing on his last expedition and is rumored to be imprisoned within Tibet. Desperate to rescue his friend, Balram agrees to guide an English captain on a foolhardy mission: After years of paying others to do the exploring, the captain, disguised as a monk, wants to personally chart a river that runs through southern Tibet. Their path will cross fatefully with that of another Westerner in disguise, fifty-year-old Katherine. Denied a fellowship in the all-male Royal Geographical Society in London, she intends to be the first European woman to reach Lhasa.

As Balram and Katherine make their way into Tibet, they will face storms and bandits, snow leopards and soldiers, fevers and frostbite. What’s more, they will have to battle their own doubts, ambitions, grief, and pasts in order to survive the treacherous landscape.

A polyphonic novel about the various ways humans try to leave a mark on the world—from the enduring nature of family and friendship to the egomania and obsessions of the colonial enterprise—The Last of Earth confirms Deepa Anappara as one of our greatest and most ambitious storytellers.

Thanks to the organisers, volunteers, booksellers and everyone in the audience @bhamlitfest for a fabulous time. Thanks to Jonathan Davidson and audience members for all the great questions. Missed @xiaolu_impressions whose travel, I learnt, had been scuttled by the vagaries of weekend British railway service - but Ishmaelle was there in spirit (and in the conversation). And thank you @sansyg04 for these photos! by @deepa.anappara

Annual @warrenwilsonmfa appreciation post! On the cab to Heathrow to catch a flight to Asheville, the taxi driver told me that as a teacher and writer I would soon be replaced by AI (he unironically said his job was safe). On my return, after a chaotic day of flight cancellations and unhelpful AI agents on airline apps that I had to rely on for rebookings, a friend sent me an article about how no one is reading books any more. What a treat then to have been able to spend ten days with people who love reading and writing as much as I do. Thanks to the students, and fellow faculty, and congratulations to @joywriteshermedicine and @saragracer, with whom I had the privilege of working, and all the other graduates! Can’t recommend the exhibition ‘How Did We Get Here?’ enough! It looks at the provenance of the Tibetan objects in the collection @ntkedlestonhall, with an incredible and moving short film by @nyimamurry capturing the personal connections Tibetans have to these objects.
