The Apex Predator of the Chamba Valleys: A Call for Coexistence 🐍🏔️
Deep in the rugged, rocky slopes and high-altitude meadows of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh (including the remote valleys of Teesa and Churah), lives one of the world’s most formidable and beautiful snakes: the Central Asian Cobra (Naja oxiana).
Also known as the Oxus Cobra or Caspian Cobra, this elusive reptile is perfectly adapted to the cold, harsh environment of the western Himalayas.
Why It Demands Respect (Not Fear)
Formidable Predator- It sits at the top of its local food chain, playing a crucial ecological role by controlling rodent populations.
Highly Venomous⚠️ It possesses one of the most potent neurotoxic venoms of any cobra species globally.
🏞️A Himalayan Treasure- Its presence in Chamba is a sign of a healthy, wild ecosystem.
Our Responsibility in the Hills:
Too often, these magnificent animals are killed out of fear or misinformation.

From the rugged ridges of Himachal Pradesh to skies across the globe, vultures are nature’s most vital sanitizers. 🦅By swiftly cleaning carcasses, their super-acidic digestion eliminates lethal pathogens like anthrax, rabies, and cholera before they contaminate our soil and mountain streams. Today, on International Vulture Awareness Day, their survival depends on us. We can protect them by spreading grassroots awareness among cattle owners to eliminate toxic veterinary NSAIDs, reporting uninsulated powerlines and injured raptors, and replacing superstitious fear with pride for these scavengers. Empowering local communities to stand guard is how we secure our skies.

Where the roads end and the steep rocky ridges begin, the true spirit of the mountains wakes up.
Up in the high altitudes of the Himalayas, the air gets thin enough to test every breath, and the freezing winds numb your fingers within minutes. Sitting motionless on a jagged slope for hours, waiting for the slightest movement against the vast landscape, is more than just photography—it’s a test of pure patience.♥️
Then, as the drifting mist suddenly clears, there it is: the true ruler of these barren heights, completely at home in the extreme cold. In that single shutter click, the exhausting climb and the biting chill completely fade away. A wild moment framed above the clouds. 🏔️✨

⚠️There was a time when the calling of the Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar) echoed across the lower hills and valleys of Chamba.They roamed freely across these landscapes, a vibrant and resilient symbol of our regional biodiversity.🌲
However, over the years, the combined pressure of human-induced forest fires, 🔥 habitat loss due to climate change, 🌍 and poaching 🏹 has taken a heavy toll on their populations. Chukars are fiercely devoted parents—during forest fires, adult birds often refuse to abandon their nests or chicks, falling victim to the very flames consuming their homes. As a result, their numbers plummeted near human settlements, forcing them to retreat to higher, isolated altitudes.
Today, places like Khajjiar remain among the few safe heavens where these high-altitude birds still find refuge in their natural habitat.🙏🏻🌲🌿
On a recent field expedition, with @kanwar_photos bhaiiii 🙏🏻and I had the privilege of observing and documenting this magnificent species in its place. For both of us, wildlife photography is rooted in absolute respect for nature. We adhere strictly to ethical birding practices: zero disturbance, maximum patience, and documenting species strictly in their wild, unaltered habitats.🌿
Understanding and preserving Chamba’s rich biodiversity isn't just about saving birds—it is about preserving our own future. When we protect their natural habitats, we secure the balance of the ecosystem that sustains us all.

High up in the valleys of Chamba, these tiny iridescent jewels bring the canopy to life. Presenting the Crimson and Purple Sunbirds in all their glory (both male and female!). One flaunts a fiery brilliance, while the other reflects deep, metallic mystery. Honestly, I can’t choose between these two! Both the Crimson and Purple Sunbirds here in Chamba are absolutely stunning in their own ways—whether it's the vibrant males or the elegant females. Nature made them both too beautiful to pick a favorite.

⚡😯My Toughest Himalayan Shot Yet... 🙌🏻🙏🏻
♥️Tracking Barn Swallows is a true test of absolute patience and skill. These tiny jets don’t just fly; they blaze through the air without stopping, making them one of the hardest birds in flight (BIF) subjects to master. To freeze this exact, mid-air parenting moment—where the parent hovers for less than a split second to feed a hungry chick on a wire—required pushing both my gear and my reflexes to the absolute limit.🤍
The real challenge, though, was ensuring the wildlife came first. I captured this intimate scene from a careful distance of about 40 feet , absolutely critical to not disturb their natural behavior. There were three chicks on the wire, all demanding food, and the parent was tirelessly feeding them for quite some time. Capturing this "mummy duty" was an immense challenge—not only because of their incredible speed, but because tracking and locking focus on them is almost impossible.🙇🏻🔥
It took hours of sheer patience, waiting and watching in their natural habitat to get that one sharp frame. To nail this photo, you need a serious combo of ultrafast shutter speed and precise focus tracking, because if you blink, you miss it. I have immense respect for nature and wildlife, which is why I took great care to capture this without causing any stress, from a long, respectful distance. This is what made the shot so rewarding!⚡
