Beawar’s Badshah Mela | A Holi You’ve Probably Never Heard Of ❤️

In Beawar, Holi does not end with colors.
For a few hours, it turns a common man into a king. 👑

👉🏻 On the second day of Holi, after Dhulandi, Beawar celebrates its famous Badshah Mela, a tradition that has been part of the city for around 175 years.

👉🏻 The story behind it :

As local legend says, Mughal emperor Akbar was once in trouble during a hunt in the forest. Raja Todarmal, one of his Navratnas, helped him by arranging whatever was needed at that moment — resources, money, and support — almost like magic. Impressed by this, Akbar gave him 4 hours of Badshahat — the honour of being king for a day.
That moment slowly became a tradition, and today the city still keeps it alive.

👉🏻 What happens during the mela :

Every year, one man from the city is chosen to become the Badshah, representing Raja Todarmal. He is dressed in royal clothes and seated on a decorated chariot. As the procession moves through the streets, he throws red gulaal into the crowd with both hands — as a symbol of wealth, blessings, and celebration.

Alongside him is Birbal, another important part of the procession. The person playing Birbal performs a special dance - Ghoomar, which many people wait to see every year.

👉🏻 More than a festival :

This celebration is not just about Holi.🎨

It is about tradition.
It is about history.
And it is about people coming together.

Different communities in the city help organise different parts of the mela, making it a symbol of Beawar’s shared culture. One selects the Badshah, another prepares him, another performs as Birbal.

👉🏻 The procession begins from Ajmeri Gate and moves through the heart of the city. Dhol plays. Gulaal fills the air. The streets turn all RED🔴

👉🏻 People even collect some of the gulaal, known as Kharchi, believing it brings good fortune. 🔯

It is loud.
It is messy.
It is beautiful.

And for a few hours in Beawar —
a common man becomes a king.👑

Bappa, gratitude for every prayer you heard and every smile you brought. Ganpati Bappa Morya!!💗🐁

I always hoped to capture the colours, emotions, and soul of Indian festivals through my lens. I've covered events and shows on multiple fields before, but this time felt extra special-because as a big dreamer, I had put this on my vision board: festivals. And now, it finally happened. My first ever festival photography, not just any festival, but the kind that makes the whole city breathe in unison. I feel truly blessed that it all started with Bappa himself.

This is Hyderabad's Khairatabad Bada Ganesha's Visarjan!!

Back in my college days in Jaipur, I used to crave this chance, but the crowds scared me off, and I didn't have proper information. Today, in a completely new city, it all came together. A huge thanks to @shuttersociety.hyd -for letting me be a part of their community, giving space to learn and grow, and making me feel like family even in a place that was new to me.

And to Bappa... grateful for every smile, every prayer answered, and every blessing these days carried.

There’s something divine about the bond we share with Bappa. Saying goodbye isn’t really a goodbye — it’s bittersweet, yes, but it’s also a promise. A promise wrapped in faith, the kind where we don’t plead for him to return… we know he will. That’s the right he’s given us — the right to wait, to welcome, to love him like more every year.🍀

These days, it always felt like he was right here, walking beside us. Holding every prayer, dancing on every dhol, smiling through every burst of colour. In the chants, in the tears, in the laughter — he was there. Still is. Always will be.

This goodbye is the best kind — not an end, but a beginning. A reminder that faith is forever. That love like this doesn’t fade.

And I’m grateful — because my very first festival through the lens📸 began with Bappa’s blessing. With devotion, with love.
