All my skinfolk ain’t kinfolk.Like a lot of us I heard these words long before I understood them. I used to think they were about betrayal. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized they’re really about discernment. Over the last few years I’ve had to accept that just because someone shares my reflection doesn’t mean they share my values. Some people will celebrate your work publicly while privately reducing you to what you can provide. They’ll treat your labor as currency, your vulnerability as access, and your humanity as something negotiable. That realization brought me back to a phrase widely associated with Zora Neale Hurston. Hurston dedicated so much of her work to preserving Black life, Black language, and Black folk traditions at a time when many believed they didn’t belong in literature. Whether she originated this saying or helped preserve it, its truth has survived for generations.This shirt isn’t about division. It’s about responsibility. It reminds me that community isn’t built because we look alike. It isn’t built through access or shared aesthetics. Community is built through care, accountability, and the people who allow you to be fully human. That’s what this shirt means to me.Available in all sizes!
