DSS 143 presented by ambient/drone specialist @iwakimakiko from Japan 🇯🇵 Menou is a Japanese DJ & live performer, exploring the deep territories of drone and ambient techno . Her approach to both DJing and live performance is centered around creating a deep drone journey . By layering subtle textures, she constructs immersive soundscapes where listeners can tune into slow, evolving changes in sound. She began her DJ career in 2015 and performed at Tokyo’s pioneering streaming platform @ukawanaohiro_dommune in 2017. Since then, she has played at various venues across Tokyo including Vent , sound space α , Kagurane , and Soup . In 2019, she began performing live sets under the name Menou. Internationally, she appeared at @mostrabcn in Barcelona, Spain, performed at the secret festival Perpendicular. Played a live set at @noname_lanaturefestival in Belgium and recently performed at @predawn_records festival where this mix was recorded. Menou her own words about her DSS session: “This mix was recorded during my opening DJ set at Predawn Festival on May 9, 2026. DSS 142 is a LIVE session presented by Hungarian artist @_kalumet : active since the mid-90s, Kalumet has witnessed the evolution of trance over decades. Whether behind the decks or playing live, a Kalumet set is never just music—it’s a psychedelic tale. He has releases on respectable imprints, such as @oslatedjeju - @navigareaudio - Lotus Parable - @spacetextures and many more. Long before dance floors, it all started with a guitar in the late ’80s, followed by bass, and a lifetime obsession with sound. His musical universe stretches from post-punk and funk to acid, early techno, experimental electronica, jazz, and traditional folk music from around the world. That wide-open culture is exactly what shaped his free-form fusion style, organic, playful, and trippy. Under names like Kalumet, Ork Monk, Trevor McGregor, or Tiger Punch, he’s released over a hundred tracks and played in some unexpected places, from cinemas and laundries to catacombs, jungles, beaches, and legendary festivals like @ozorafestivalofficial @boomfestivalofficial and Lost Theory. Today, based in Hungary, he keeps doing what he’s always done best: blending musician instinct with psychedelic dancefloor energy, and telling stories through sound. Kalumet about the DSS session: “I recorded this live act for DSS, basically just messing around with my clips in Ableton, therefore no actual tracks are played except for two - an unreleased somewhere in the middle and ‘Tumult’ at the end (released last year on Space Textures). Hailing from Osaka, Japan, @erikluebs presents an extended 4-hour LIVE session (!), recorded at @funke.fu in Ghent during a one-time-only Deep Space Series event. Erik Luebs is a US-born musician and sound designer based in Osaka, Japan. Eschewing typical genre tropes, Luebs approaches techno with a playfully disruptive technique, reinterpreting the fundamentals using built-from-scratch patches and labyrinthine sequencing. While the labor-intensive process is inspired by a wide range of luminaries such as Mark Fell and Rrose, the resulting music is firmly tied to the dance floor. @pugilistmusic is a Scottish/Kiwi producer and DJ living in Melbourne making a wide variety of underground electronic music. He has released music on record labels such as @samurai_music @modern_hypnosis @_3024_music_ to name a few and has recently launched his own imprint Ruff Kutz. Known for his well curated musical sets and versatility as a dj, with an armoury of unreleased dubs - no shazam necessary! This ambient/experimental session by @parallelfestival head honcho @refractedmusic was recorded at a Lucid Dreams event at Espacio Perpendicular and publicly released as DSS 136 for your listening pleasure! Refracted’s music feels as fundamentally human as it sounds otherworldly. It is techno more as an idea and conduit, than as an easily- labeled sound. It is dance music where layered rhythms act almost on a neural, sub epidermal level, while moving and evolving soundscapes acquire a tactile, understated physicality. Paramount examples of this can be found on releases on Refracted’s own Mind Express label, and on celebrated labels like @bittarecords @polegroup @semantica_records_oficial Sublunar and Canadian ambient/deep-techno imprint @silentseason With his path unraveling further, his sound has evolved beyond just techno, becoming a conduit for exploring the boundaries of experimental and drone music. Spiritual, almost meditative, his sets also possess a strong kinetic energy when needed, which is a clear indication of a DJ who knows the fundamental role of dancing as part of the ritual.
