$25 MILLION ON THE LINE.

Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico stood in front of Black Houstonians this week to directly address post-primary skepticism following his race against Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

He came with big promises: A $25 million pledge dedicated to mobilizing Black voters across Texas. Policy commitments to fight maternal mortality. Action plans to dismantle voter suppression.

Winning a statewide election in Texas requires a powerful coalition—and Houston’s Black electorate is the engine. But as November approaches, the real question remains:

Are town hall pledges and campaign dollars enough to turn unenthusiastic voters into motivated voters at the ballot box?

While the U.S. remains an unrivaled economic and technological superpower, international metrics show the country is no longer classified as a full democracy. Our primary and secondary education systems are falling behind peer nations, and the data points to one specific root cause: America’s ongoing refusal to resolve systemic racial inequality.

One Division I scholarship offer was all he needed to completely rewrite the script.

When Zachary Marshall arrived at Texas Southern University, the odds were stacked against him. As a true freshman, he was supposed to be waiting his turn. Instead, he out-hustled a sixth-year senior to earn the starting center spot, anchoring a TSU offensive line that finished in the Top 25 of all FCS programs. 12 games started, zero signs of backing down.

Now heading into his sophomore campaign, Zach isn’t resting on last year’s breakout. He spent the entire offseason refining his technique and leveling up his run blocking to make sure TSU dominates the trenches this season.

HISD just locked in a $2 billion budget for the upcoming school year, and the math is raising a lot of questions.

Superintendent Mike Miles is pushing his academic reform agenda forward, even with a $24.6 million deficit and shrinking student enrollment. The board lowered the property tax rate—saving the average resident about $55 a year—and bumped minimum hourly pay to $17. They’re also putting $4.5 million into AI-focused “Future 2” schools and spending over $8,400 per student in NES schools.

But critics, including Trustee Maria Benzon, aren’t sold. They point out that central office cuts and recent school closures haven’t actually delivered the savings officials promised.

It leaves parents and taxpayers caught in the middle: Are these deep cuts and tech investments the right move for our kids, or is the district overpromising while running on a deficit?
